tiggymalvern: (charles-erik good isn't it?)
Last Friday was the last forecast day of nice weather, and I took off back to Mount Rainier/Tahoma National Park, this time to Glacier Basin. I only went there once, many years ago - it was the first hike I did at Rainier/Tahoma after I moved here.

I had something of a repeat of the Wallace Lake experience, unfortunately. The forecast was mostly sunny with a bit of cloud, and that was the case practically the whole of the drive there. As I crossed the National Park boundary, there was more cloud, unfortunately, and it stayed mainly overcast all the way up and only started to clear as I headed back down.

Another perfect Friday, and I took off for Mount Rainier (Tahoma) National Park, and the Burroughs Loop out of Sunrise, which I haven't done in quite a few years (definitely pre-covid) but blows my mind every time.

Bobcat

We had a visible bobcat again the other morning, at around 9am. I first saw it on the lawn, then it wandered around the side of the house, across the driveway, up the wall and there I lost track of it.

This last Friday, the weather did not lie, it cooperated! Sunny all the way!

I went hiking last Friday for the first time in three weeks. A couple of weeks ago, I chose to go diving on my free day instead. It was actually a lovely dive, with unexpectedly clear water for the time of year.

Ten days ago, I planned to go hiking, and then the forecast changed to thunderstorms. (Sadly we didn't get any thunderstorms here. If I'm going to cancel my plans, I at least want to see the lightning! They did happen in other places, though, so my choice was correct.)

The last week of August was unseasonably dismal weather here - grey and showery, with highs around 68/20. But Friday's forecast said the clouds would clear mid-morning, so I decided to believe it. We also needed to have enough time to go grocery shopping that day, so I couldn't drive too far. I've never been to Wallace Lake in all these years of living here, though I've been to Wallace Falls several times, so off I went to fix that.

On Tuesday, I hiked to Crystal Lakes in Mount Tahoma/Rainier National Park. The lakes aren't very large, and they're quite shallow, but they're very pretty. I always enjoy this hike, which I last did three years ago.

I hiked to Mason Lake on Tuesday. According to my photo files, it's ten years since I last there. That's not a reflection on Mason Lake, more on how many different amazing places there are to go hiking around here.

I hiked up to Annette Lake last Friday, before the holiday weekend crowds descended. Have I only been there once before? I think so. I only remember hiking it in snow one year and overlooking a frozen lake, a decade or more ago, so that was a completely different hike anyway. It was time to return!

Hiking season is upon us again! Partly at least. When we drove over Chinook Pass a week ago, there was still snow at road level, so the high mountains need to wait another month or so, but the lower slopes are opening up.

This was a good hike to start the season - 6.2 miles round trip and only 1220 feet up hill, on a reasonably steady trail with no steep parts. Max elevation was only 3780 feet, but there were still a few snow patches in shady areas here and there around Olallie.

Two weeks ago, the local Lotus club decided anyone willing should turn up at the weekly Sunday unofficial car meet at Madrona Park. Caterhams are Lotuses by another name, so that included us. I didn't take many photos of the Lotuses, since we've seen most of them regularly at the All British Field Meet, but there were a couple of nice additions, plus the usual bizarre collection of people's pride and joys. (It's funny the cars that some people want to show off - pimped out Audis and VW Golfs just aren't special enough, sorry. I know you love them, but...)

It's photospam time! What better way to start a New Year than floating on a boat out in the warmer parts of the Pacific Ocean? Spending some of the days diving below the surface, obviously :-)

I took a trip to the Revillagigedos Islands (I can pronounce that now). Nicknamed the Mexican Galapagos Islands, they're a Mexican National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the closest of which is 240 miles south-west of Cabo San Lucas at the tip of Baja. Like the Galapagos Islands, they are/were home to a bunch of endemic critters, most of which are extinct or endangered. Unlike the Galapagos Islands, the only people allowed to set foot on them are some wildlife researchers and some members of the Mexican navy. A naval base always comes in useful for prevention of illegal fishing and trespassing.

So when you're going to Revillagigedos, you're going to be living on a boat. And the only reason to do that is to play with the animals in the water - the area's famed for its oceanic giant mantas, LOTS of sharks, and sometimes whales, dolphins and other fun friends. This is my post of still photos taken above water - the critters will be coming later, when I've edited my way through many hours of video.

I decided the best way to get the Burn Notice fic out of my brain is to write the bloody thing. It's only going to be short, so it won't take too long, though it does involve some research. I could skim over that stuff and ignore the detail, except once again I'm writing for a fandom stuffed with incredibly detail-oriented characters (and then there's me, yes, I'm detail-oriented too). So the fic is currently slightly under 2000 words and I have a bunch of open Firefox tabs.

All of this will be interrupted by the fact that it's Christmas in a few days, and I'm off on a diving trip on December 28th, so it won't get finished until mid-late January. Then I'll have to hope there's someone among my trusted people to beta a no-sex BDSM fic in a small fandom for a series that ended in 2013. Heh. (Yes, there'll be a readership of about 10 for this thing. Why am I fussing over the details again? Because I'm me, that's why.)

In other news, I was over in the mountains yesterday for the Cle Elum Christmas Bird Count. There was a foot of snow, with more falling through the morning, and it was cold. 12F to 18F through the day (-11 to -7C). It looked beautiful as always, but those conditions don't inspire the birds to be active, and the only places we found any numbers were at feeders or farms (also feeders, albeit unintentional ones). But as we said at the time, data of low numbers is still data.

Hood Canal

Back in July, when we booked a diving weekend to the Hood Canal (fjord) in mid October, we said, "At least the water should be clearer by then. The weather will be hit and miss, though, could be lovely, could be storms."

Well, we got the lovely part. It was 80F/27C both days. Shorts and T-shirts, wine-tasting, dining outdoors on a balcony overlooking the fjord. And the water did what it was supposed to as well. We dived Flagpole back in May, and I wrote in my logbook, 'Great site. Would be awesome in better vis.' So I was delighted to go back there last weekend and find you could see for 30 feet or so, rather than 10-15. We couldn't have timed anything better, honestly.

The dive video is still being edited, but this was the Lake Cushman overlook mid afternoon.

And still the sunshine rolls in! Wednesday's hike was Margaret Lake, another place I'd never been to. Definitely chilly in the mornings now, but it warms up nicely, and 11am is a really good time to arrive at the trailhead.

Source Lake

tiggymalvern: (what world?)
Source Lake was rather generously named, since it's definitely more of a large pond. It is, however, the source of the Snoqualmie River, so its status outweighs its size. And so do its surroundings. Monday was probably the last day of real summer - 79F/26C, shorts and a sleeveless shirt in October, I'll take it!

Monday was another beautiful day when summer hadn't left yet (though today it looks like it probably has). I'd been thinking of going to Source Lake, and then when I saw how perfect the forecast was, I thought, 'Nope, I want to go further!' So I picked Melakwa Lake, which is a close enough drive that I can spend more time on the trail.

And then I got half way there in the car and realised I forgot to take NSAIDs before I left. I wondered whether to switch back to Source Lake, and then I decided to carry on with the plan and turn back if anything started to ache too much.

Snow Lake

There are some great reasons to go to Snow Lake. It's absolutely gorgeous. It's easy to get to, only an hour's drive from Seattle, and the trailhead is just two miles from I-90. The trailhead's also a ski resort in winter, so there's plenty of parking - not much risk of getting there and finding it's full.

These are the same reasons NOT to go to Snow Lake. Because 10,000 other people go there each summer. What that means in practice is you never go at the weekend, and you never go during the school holidays. It's a trip to make in June when the snow first disappears or at the tail end of the hiking season when most people are at work. You'll still meet a bunch of people on the trail, but thinly enough spread that you can enjoy the mountains.

Lodge Lake

This week's hike was a slightly shorter one, because I had stuff to do in the afternoon. It should have been 4 miles round trip with 1000 feet of climb, but it ended up being more like 5 miles, because I missed the side turn to the lake from the main trail, and I went about another half mile before I was sure and reversed course. Anyway, this hike was a good find, because it's a shorter length and closer to home when I need a half day outing, plus it's not that high elevation, so it will be accessible for more than half the year.

Spray Park

Monday was hiking day again, a real one! I've heard good things about Spray Park at Mount Tahoma (Rainier) for years as a flower destination. Usually I've been to Berkeley Park or Naches Peak for flowers, but with the awful construction on Hwy 410, this year I decided to check out the alternative. Especially since the trip reports for the weekend said the mosquito hordes had gone from 'terrible' to 'not too bad'.

This week's hike was a quick one and closer to home, because I had an appointment in the morning so couldn't set out until later. It was also the only overcast day of the week, which is what happens when you offer to work extra days to help cover for someone :-( So the pictures are less dramatic than the high mountains, and with mostly flat grey skies...
