'REPPUU' (Hurricane)
EDIT: Comments now contain spoilers for major events in later volumes, for those who haven't read ahead. You are warned!
My translation, my guesswork.
The kids watch the explosion in the desert, still puzzling over Wolfwood and how they felt they knew him.
Pages 46-7. And emerging from the other side of that explosion, there's Wolfwood.

Page 48. Some of the other hired goons look on in astonishment. "One strike..." "One strike? To take out a Class 'S' cyborg? A sneak attack then? Filthy bastard." But the first guy's far from convinced surprise was all there was to it. (I really only scanned this page for that first panel of Wolfwood XD)

A huge guy with a really big axe goes for Wolfwood, and the other goons continue to watch and discuss. They're starting to figure out why they were offered so much money for this job.
Page 51. We're still getting the ranting commentary two pages later as Wolfwood looks right at them. Then revs the bike and swings it around away from them.

Page 52. As Wolfwood disappears into the lingering smoke, the goons are puzzled. The spiky-haired guy sees an opportunity and goes streaking after Wolfwood, while his companions yell at him to wait."You will know the ferocity of the Super Ultimate Tiger Family!!' shouts Spikyhead. Hidden in the smoke, Wolfwood whips the Punisher up and fires a rocket directly behind him. (Okay, it's not just me, is it? It really does look like that guy's got his naked ass hanging out of his trousers? Maybe it's just an unfortunate effect of the way Nightow's drawn the cloth in that panel, but we never see another rear shot of him to say....)

Spikyhead looks surprised as he gets a rocket to the gut. Wolfwood shifts the Punisher again and fires a single rocket directly upwards. He's still hidden in the smoke, and the goons' eyes follow the rocket upwards - until one of them goes down in a series of gunshots.
Page 56. And Wolfwood emerges from the smoke on a flying motorbike, pistol in hand.
Page 57. More goons are taken out by serial gunfire, and Wolfwood flashes back to his training.

Page 58. Young Wolfwood struggling and apparently in pain as Chapel looks on. "Too slow. What are you hesitating for?" There should be nothing in his mind but accomplishing his aim. Humanity is a hindrance, and more along those lines.

Wolfwood, teeth gritted, rides through an onslaught of bullets. Chapel sits calmly inside the orphanage, thinking about the changes in Wolfwood that he can now massacre. Wolfwood rides the bike into a group of goons.
Page 61. Still firing, he flips the back of the bike round and crushes the skull of one of the fallen guys in a spray of blood.

Inside, Chapel laughs as he talks about gouging out the weak spots, causing death with maximum efficiency. "Summon the commotion of battle, the corpses!!"
Page 63. More jets of blood outside. "Sloppy!!" shouts Chapel. "You survive again, you bastard." He too thinks back to Wolfwood's training.

On the next page Chapel is teary-eyed and quiet. He closes his eyes. "That guy is perfection."
Page 65. And he's thinking of Livio, chained and bound.

Wolfwood is on foot now. A goon stands behind him. "You bastard... this... I'm gonna beat you to death." Wolfwood raises his hand and points upwards. "Direct hit just there," he says. The rocket he fired earlier is on its way back down, and splats the thug.
Pages 68-9. Wolfwood stands among carnage and the sound of moans.

One of the cyborgs back a way is down but not completely immobile. "Shit... by just one... this far." But he's not willing to be totally defeated.
Page 71. "The willpower of the last of the Super Ultimate Tiger Family..." And he opens up as his built-in rocket launcher as he lies in the sand. "Oi, bastard!!" Wolfwood looks up and sees. "You did well! You fought well! I admire you for it." But the battle's not over.

The rocket's pointing directly at the orphanage. Wolfwood shouts at the guy to stop. "NOOOOO, I won't stop! the lives of your friends will make up for the huge degree of our shame." Wolfwood's yelling, but the man won't be dissuaded. "Your eyes will burn this huge reversal of fortune into your memory." And as the man prepares to fire, Wolfwood screams to Livio to stop him.
Page 74. Livio grabs the rocket as it launches...

Page 75. ...and throws it back at the guy.

Page 76. As the dust settles, the two men stand and look at one another. Wolfwood says Livio almost fumbled it and calls him an asshole. Livio tells him with extreme politeness not to say things like that, it's the drawback of having an old body. I notice the shades come off to talk to Livio....

The first dose of Wolfwood being the killer we always knew he could be, in impressive style. And gotta love Nightow for adding that edge of showing that he became exactly what Chapel always wanted him to be. Ouchie.

Date: 2005-06-15 10:39 pm (UTC)I don't actually think Vash 'needs' anybody. He was fighting alone for a long time before Wolfwood came along, and he coped. There's no question the two complemented one another in just about every way going - fighting style, temperament, morals - they evened out one another's edges. But while it's good for Vash to have someone and he'd certainly like to have someone, he will always get on and do things himself if he has to, because that's who Vash is. And Vash has learned things from Wolfwood that he doesn't forget just because he's gone. He remains different from how he was before.
