I'm going to be in Vegas for four days in late April, of which two half days will be taken up by the mundane work-related reasons for being there. So, all you well-travelled and tasteful people who inhabit my f-list - what's good to see that isn't Vegas? I'm thinking day trips out here, deserts and canyons and dramatic scenery - we'll be renting a car for the duration to get out of the city. Pour forth your knowledge and opinions upon me!

EDIT: Googling is suggesting the Valley of Fire State Park and Red Rock Canyon might be good places. Anyone been to the Hoover Dam? Is that worth a trip?

The SB goes on and on about a great little bar outside of the city that's very interesting. Could ask him for directions if you like. He'd probably know about hiking, too, since he's big on that.

We're definitely more interested in the hiking side than bars. I can sit in a bar anywhere.

R. and I really enjoyed going to the Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Botanical Cactus Gardens. It's exactly what the name says: a chocolate factory, with an impressive cactus garden.

That sounds an interesting suggestion :-) Might be a good one to eat up one of those stray half days, thanks!

Unfortunately I didn't get to see much of Vegas outside of Vegas (and in case you're wondering, it's very hard to find gay porn in LV, the friends whose wedding we attended insisted we look in the middle of the night!). But the terrain around it looks quite stark and beautiful, no doubt some great hiking.

Googling is giving me some good suggestions on hiking, with places like the Valley of Fire State Park - I certainly got just enough glimpses of the mountains on my last trip that way to want to go and climb some! The temperatures should be about right in April too, at least for me :-)
