We just went to the (very nice indeed) seasonal dinner of local geeks. At the dinner, while talking about films, I bemoaned the fact that this afternoon we turned up at 1.05pm to see the 1.30 showing of Brokeback Mountain, and found a queue all around the corner and didn't get in ::sniff::

Geek 1: Which movie's that?
Geek 2: Oh, that's the gay cowboy movie.
Geek 1: Why would you want to go and see that?
Me: Well, let me see now....

How long has this geek spent prowling around the internet for bizarre things? And he's managed not to fall over slash? 0_0

The evening would have been better if we hadn't found a parking ticket on the car when we got back. We paid, dammit! We put our money in the box for our stall number! Go screw yourselves for your parking fine, bitches!

...and thus they know well their own right hands.

Actually, I know some VERY women-folk savvy geeks, but they're special. :-)

Well, those ones have been educated by exposure XD

But they had to have something special to START with, or we wouldn't have exposed ourselves to them, would we?

Well, I'll admit I didn't pick the first geek who came along XD

Geek 1: Why would you want to go and see that?

Dear lord, why wouldn't we?

I have to admit that was my first reaction. I mean, ignoring the fact that it's 'the gay cowboy movie', it's a film that's got a lot of good reviews - rottentomatoes gives it 87% fresh. Even if I wasn't slashily-inclined, I'd probably still go to see it because Ang Lee makes great films (if you ignore the Hulk *cough*)

Exactly, that's why I wanted to see it, because it's supposedly a really great film.

Uhmm... maybe the geeks don't notice anything that doesn't have unrealistic women in it? Or something like that....

And can you fight the ticket? Still have the receipt from the stall?

Receipt? What is this thing you speak of? That would imply there was some sort of high-tech system. Roughly half the car parks in Seattle have a hole you push money into.

Oh, I thought maybe it was one of the new hitech meters where you have to use a card of some sort and then get a receipt in return. Sorry, guess you're screwed, then! :-P

In some ways, Seattle has a reputation as a very high tech city, and in others, it's laughable! But then I never came across a car parking system that didn't involve receipts in the UK at all, so I don't know how widespread it is in the States.

I hear the system is slowly spreading across the US (make that *very* slowly)... but the last time I saw such a parking system, it was in Toronto this summer. So yeah, quite the ways to go!

Why would anyone willingly want to read half the geek related stuff they do? Different interests for different people. I would've loved to hear the rest of this conversation though. Did you shock them silent? Give them links to some good slash? *giggles*

Actually, I was remarkably restrained, and confined myself to the generic principle of 'Two cute guys? What's not to like?' The geek then protested, more or less, 'But they're kissing each other!'

At which point, it was my sweet SO sitting between us who interrupted with, 'Well, you like lesbians, don't you? Same thing.'

That had the usual effect of rendering the geek briefly puzzled, but quiet!

It doesn't even really begin to cover why I like slash, but it's the answer that guys seem to find easiest to understand, rather than all the possible much longer explanations.

Hee, I had a similar discussion the other night at work! Someone mentioned Brokeback Mountain, and I said I wanted to see it. So the male coworkers were all 'why would you want to see a gay cowboy movie?'. My response was, of course, 'because they're two cute gay cowboys'. I had to point out that just as some men like the concept of two women together, that some women enjoy seeing/reading about two men (or more!) together. My more enlightened coworker agreed that he could see the sense behind that.

But they all went quiet when I told them my boyfriend would willingly go w/ me to the movie because when I'm 'happy', he's 'happy'.

*snort!* I can see them considering that a bit of TMI, but it works for every slasher's SO that I know of! XD

I found that when I showed up to see Brokeback Mountain, it was sold out. And the two showings after were sold out already as well. Of course, I should have expected this, seeing as how I live in San Francisco and all ...

It's showing in two cinemas here, and they're both off Broadway, which is the gay district. You'd think the big cineplexes would get a clue from the sold-out shows and long queues and show the damn film!

I'll be back later this week, with tickets booked in advance.
