Coyote puppies

Some years, the coyote pack make their den a fair distance away, and we rarely see them. Other years, they're right at the bottom of our garden loudly yipping and howling on a daily basis. This year is one of those years, and last week dad coyote brought two puppies up to visit my ex-lawn, which is now more of a buttercup field.

I was filming these ten minutes before I left the house to go out of town for a long weekend with the birdwatchers, of which more later. But that's why the video editing and posting had to wait until after I got back.

So cute, I love coyotes! We had a pack living somewhere nearby when we first moved to our place and I got to hear them howling every night. We could always tell when one of them got something because their yipping changed. Every now and then we'd see one during daylight or dusk crossing our back yard. Unfortunately, they moved when a business moved in close by and decided it was a good idea to hold outdoor concerts in the middle of a residential area. That business closed down but not before the damage was done. I no longer hear the pack or the great horned owl that we used to hear at night. I hope they come back.

Awww, I remember you telling me about your great horned owls years ago. I'm sorry they moved out. I hope you still have your baby bunnies at least!

There are some baby bunnies but not so many as in years past. Tularemia seems to be fairly prolific recently. We do still have our quail that visit every day. We're spreading out the bird seed to try to keep them as socially distanced as possible because of bird flu going around. Found a hummingbird's nest a few days ago. While looking for more I saw a newly fledged out Sharp Shinned hawk on a brand nearby.

Oooh, nice! Our sharp-shinned hawks don't breed here, they stay with us for the winter then head up into the mountains when spring comes. We do have a lot of hummingbrds around right now, though - we seem to have more rufous this year than we often do. They're constantly staging fighter jet battles around the house.
