TriMax 9 Chapter 1.1

This chapter's long and plot-filled - there's a lot going on, and as usual with Nightow, most of it's in the art rather than just the words, so this is another one I'm splitting in two to limit the number of scans per post.
Chapter One - 'Kokyou' (Hometown)
TriMax 9 hasn't been translated at all by Sumire. The usual disclaimers over how much my Japanese sucks apply.
The cover, because it's the last of its kind....

Page 05. Livio sits on the steps of the orphanage. Wolfwood: "Don't cry like that. Nearly everyone cries when they first get here, but three days straight is kind of a record." Livio doesn't answer. Wolfwood holds out some bread. "I'm Nicholas... eat this."

Streams of refugees on trucks all pouring in the same direction. Wolfwood on a motorbike is headed the other way. He reaches a bridge across a gorge where there's a military guard post. "Don't you know about the Ark?" a guard asks him. December is being evacuated - if the bridge goes down, like the one by Knives' hideout did, the area will be cut off. The guard, Brian, is called over by one of the others, and Wolfwood revs up the bike. "Hey, hey, wait!!" yells Brian.
Page 12. Wolfwood heads for the blockade, swinging the Punisher around to aim for the lock.

Page 13. He blasts his way through, with Brian yelling after him that he's an asshole who's gonna die a dog's death and they won't help him.

Page 14. Livio was a quiet kid who just sat around corners of the orphanage hugging his knees. Wolfwood eventually gets tired of it and throws a drink can at his head XD. "Why are you always like that? You scared? You had enough of it?" Still no response from Livio. "This again," says Wolfwood, sticking out his tongue. But he persists, and Livio eventually speaks up. "Do you get it?"
"Huh?" says Wolfwood.

"Do you know what I'm feeling!!" yells the teary-eyed Livio. Livio feels that he has no value to anyone. Wolfwood looks across at the other kids playing football (that's soccer, yo) in the orphanage grounds. He points out to Livio that it's tough being abandoned by your parents, but every kid there has their own sob story to tell, and they're not sitting around sulking.
Page 16. He leaves Livio to think it over, telling him they could use some help in the kitchen. A little while later, Livio duly shows up and finds himself doing the washing up and talking to the other kids. And Wolfwood gets to feel smug XD. And that's how life went on until a certain day...

Page 17. ...when something really important happened to Livio. "Aunt Melanie, it's awful! It's Jasmine!!" The puppy's doing something stupid and puppy-like, and Jasmine's gone after it and got stuck. Wolfwood's rushing towards her. "Jasmine, don't look down!"

Jasmine sees him coming and looks up. "Nico-nii!" (nii being 'older brother'). She starts to move and she falls.
Page 19. Down the bottom, Livio comes rushing over and catches her.

Page 20. Later, Wolfwood and Livio sit watching Jasmine play with her puppy. Livio thanks Wolfwood for everything he's done for him, realising now that all of their lives have value, including his own. He's being terribly respectful here, calling him 'Wolfwood-san' - highly unusual in kids of the same age, especially in Trigun. Wolfwood just thinks it's funny XD.

Shortly afterwards, Wolfwood's taking one of the smaller kids to the loo in the night, looking forward to when he's old enough to go alone. He sees someone in the shadows, and recognises Livio.
Page 22. Livio turns and sees him watching. "What are you doing in the middle of the night like this?" Wolfwood asks. The kid distracts him, "Nico-nii... come on...". When Wolfwood turns back to Livio, he's vanished.
The next morning, there's a loud scream.

Page 23. The puppy's been killed. Wolfwood remembers seeing Livio, and runs to the dorm to confront him. But Livio's just acting normal, asking what's going on so early in the morning. He's feeling tired still.

Page 24. Then Livio looks down at his hands and sees the blood....
The kids are causing a near-riot outside Aunt Melanie's room, all demanding to hear Livio's explanation - they all know about the blood. Wolfwood's trying to be the voice of reason, telling them to wait, that Aunt Melanie will find out what happened.

Inside the room, Livio tells Aunt Melanie he doesn't know anything about it, begging her to believe him, and she realises he's being honest. She tells him to stay in her room for tonight, and she'll explain things to everyone else. The other kids finally barge past Wolfwood and into the room. Aunt Melanie tries to reason with them, but they don't want Livio at the orphanage any more. Livio stares down at the floor, remembering the cute happy puppy and the blood on his hands, and his eyes get wider and wider. He jumps to his feet, and sees Jasmine watching him from the doorway - she turns and runs away.
Page 27. Livio disappeared from the orphanage after that, and Wolfwood was left feeling unhappy about the way he was treated.

And here ends today's dosage. I feel pretty sorry for Livio here - he obviously has no memory of what he did or why, and there goes his new-found safe haven.
I just adore kid!Wolfwood. He's so well-intentioned, and perfectly happy to get the results he wants by being unpleasant and manipulative if nice doesn't work XD. He's such a ball of attitude!

Date: 2005-06-11 11:16 pm (UTC)Nico is just a shortening of his name, yeah - 'nii' or 'ani' is older brother, so in effect all the kids at the orphanage are calling him 'Big brother Nick'. The role seems to suit him really well.

Date: 2005-06-12 01:56 pm (UTC)Aw. I feel so bad for Livio. Poor kid. Had he already had incidents of split-personality before, and that's why he was so reluctant to join in the family/community of the orphanage? If he had, how bad were the things he did, and how much does he remember (if anything)? Suddenly his question of "Do you know what I'm feeling?" seems a lot harder to answer. I wonder. Hm.
Nightow draws the most adorablest kids EVER.
I love the cover to death. Why do you say it's the last of its kind? Do I even want to know?

A lot of things change from here, and fast. Nightow drops his usual bad stuff on his poor innocent characters!

Date: 2005-06-12 07:38 pm (UTC)Yes!!! XDD It seems that he had an ultra-natural sexiest way to pose...Born with him!! And the second panel...Look's so cool *¬*. Argh...What I'm doing thinking in his sexiness and not in his kid-cuteness?? >__< Anyway, This is HIS book -and a little bit of Livio- ;__;, and I miss Wolfwood so much u_u

Date: 2005-06-12 11:40 pm (UTC)Nothing too surprising in there, really. Legato had to have a pretty traumatic background to go even half way to explaining him, and I always figured Knives got hold of him when he was pretty young to twist him some more.
