I hate shopping. I hate it on general principle. But I hate it even more when we're not shopping for anything we want, but stuff we're obligated to buy because of other people. Like how we had to go out today and buy a whole bunch of new special bedding, because the SO's mother doesn't want to sleep on the cheap stuff we use.

Now, admittedly this didn't cost us anything, because a year ago she gave us money to buy new bedding. But since we were perfectly happy sleeping on the cheap stuff, and frankly had better things to spend hundreds of dollars on, we didn't bother. Sadly, her arrival is imminent, and we had to spend our entire afternoon searching for things that might meet with her approval.

And it was bloody annoying. And my time is worth more than this.

Je commiserate, ma soeur.

We spent all day at Flower World, a 15-acre nursery in in exhilarating Maltby, which is located directly behind God's left nutsac. But that was to buy cool statues and black stemmed bamboo and hibiscus for our lanai, so you win the blue ribbon in the suck day division, cuz it always blows to shop for other people's neuroses. >_<

And what, I ask, is wrong with cheap bedding? You're gonna be asleep for all the time you'll actually be close enough to care.

Really, I'm having a hard time imagining how such an uptight mom could have spawned such a pleasant laid-back cool guy as your S.O.

XD

I never gave a damn what I slept in, as long as it was a bed of some sort. Two months of sleeping on an inflatable mattress while the bed was in transit did get vaguely tiresome, I'll grant you, but I can't tell the difference between the quality of sheets. I'm asleep or distracted!

I actually like shopping for plants and gardens (it comes close behind manga shopping XD), so you definitely win.

So does he, frequently. Thankfully he's a lot more like his dad.

Haha, this would have been FUN for me. Next time, give me a wad of cash and a preferred color and let me go wild. I LOVE shopping for sheets.

We had small disagreements on the colour front, but basically our opinions match. The big problems came because of the store and the suppliers - somehow, everything we decided we wanted didn't have the right size quilt cover or the right size bedskirt. Sheets alone wouldn't have been a problem, but there was always something missing that we needed to match, and then we'd have to start from scratch again.

And damn, but flowery, frilly things seem to be in right now. I can't tell you how much they aren't me. The store should be renamed Monstrosities R Us.

*shudders in horror* Give me one solid color, preferably not something too stark or "bold" in nature or a small, subtle pattern in 300+ thread count in the right size and I'll be happy. We recently found some pale green (almost white) sheets with tiny floral print with spandex in it. The fitted bottom sheet goes on nice and tight and the top sheet... it stretches back to size after I finish untying the SO and you'd never know what it was used for...

O.o

You can bring smut into anything, can't you

Nope. That was *all* you, sweetie. But if I could, I'd consider it a gift :P

I never said I did anything of a sexual nature in using a sheet to tie FH. Did I? It could've been just a restraining device so he didn't fall out of the bed or something. *whistles innocently* Purely for his safety and all that XD

300+ thread count in

See, this is where you lose me. Who cares? I *can* actually tell the difference, yeah - for the five minutes I spend in bed when I'm not either sleeping, or doing things that don't involve thinking about the sheets.

Tying with sheets just sounds like a hassle!

Like I said up top, sheets weren't the problem. If we'd only wanted sheets, we'd have been in and out of the store in 5 minutes. They had plenty of sheets in every colour you could want. It's everything else to go with the goddamn sheets so they match that was screwing with us.

I'm not buying you bed linen for Xmas. Only mothers do things like that. I hope.

Too bad you didn't come across a Tuesday Morning. They have great bargains on the "nice" sheets in low key colors.

*hugs* Hope the visit goes well. I just found out I'll be hosting a house full. It's not enough that I have everything else going on, but instead of just JP's sister and niece coming for a week long visit, 3 more people are showing up without even thinking it might not be the best time to do so. I'll be thinking of you!

But that's quite obviously the last thing either of you need atm! How hideously unthoughtful of them. I suppose JP's relatives would be keen to see him with his illness, but any idiot should realise that you'll both be tired and a lot of hassle looking after guests is not going to be constructive.

Good luck, anyway. Hope it's not too hard on you :-(

Man, you're going to be having a FUN couple of weeks XD

And I haven't begun to tell you about the SO's sister ::headdesk:: The longest I spent with her before was a week, and I wanted to strangle her several times over.

I just wish I'd been able to make time to get some real translation done this week, let alone writing :-(

Nobody in my family ever had any complaints either. But the SO's mother lives very differently than we do! Great icon XD

Are you getting graded both on your choice of thread count and on whether SO's mother-in-law's bedding would pass the Martha Stewart test? And how long do you have to put up with visitors?

You have all my sympathy - I thank the powers that be that my in-laws and parents are not like that. (esp since our decorating scheme is Starving Grad Student.)

I think she'll still be disappointed by thread count. I have a certain level beyond which I think it's damn near immoral to spend that much on a quilt cover. And it's much lower than hers.

The next few months are going to be major relative infestation. We've got one set of the SO's family visiting, then the other set about three weeks later, then my own family the day after his leave! Each group's staying for a couple of weeks. Damned if I know when I'm gonna get much writing done before mid August.... :-(

See, this is where it's good to be an American, where you can employ Benjamin Franklin's aphorism of "Fish and visitors stink after three days." XD You deserve a special award and a week alone (preferably somewhere grandiose, like a secluded cabin on the edge of a canyon, whatever your pleasure) for putting up with relatives for nine weeks straight.

Re: duvet covers - my aunt once gave me a catalog of bedding before I got married, encouraging me to pick something I liked. She meant well, but the price averaged about $100 for one sheet, and that was unacceptable even for a present. Plus, everything had frills and scalloped edges. The horror.

The thing about putting an ocean between you and family, is that they don't come as often, but when they do, they feel justified in staying! Can't really make them spend $800 plus on flights each, then kick them out after 3 days, sadly....

I feel your horror. Truly. It was matched on Saturday. At least you didn't have the store to put up with!

It is rough sometimes having to be the dutiful 'daughter-in-law'. . . one learns first hand how the hubby's mom likes things. *chuckles* we've all been there done that. But just look at it as something that meets with your approval first in terms of quality, color and design. And she should be happy that it is clean and new for her.

And yeah I slept on futons for many years on the floor and then graduated to the futon mattress on the futon frame, and finally a real bed. The funny thing about furniture is . . . we sat on the floor so many years if we listened to music or watched the television that when we finally got real nice furniture . . LAUGHS . . . well we STILL sit on the floor and lean up against the leather couch. The leather couch is pretty to look at but ya slide off the dang thing. Moral to the story is do the things that make you comfortable and when family or guest come just offer them a cleaner house but still your style. ^____~

We slept on a mattress on the floor for 3 years before we actually bought a bed, so I know that sort of progression well! My attitude to these things has always been pretty casual *g*.

I sometimes sit on floors, or prop myself on the sofa arm, but I'm also fond of the sitting on the sofa (deep and saggy - no sliding off XD) with a beanbag under my feet. That works well!
