Chapter One - Happy Days

Sumire's full translation is here.

Sumire's added a few scan links to her site since the last time I was there, so I've deliberately gone for scanning different pages for you. Aren't I thoughtful? XD

Page 01. You won't be seeing these guys again for a little while. Make the most of them.

Page 04. With the alarms shrieking, Rem tells the kids to lock themselves away and not come out, no matter what.

Page 06. More crew members are waking up to deal with the emergency.

Page 12. Several pages of talking and fiddling with the computers later, emergency over and crash averted, but the other crew are suspicious of what caused it. Rem denies that anything unusual has been going on while they were asleep.

Page 15. Conrad the engineer's obviously not the trusting type. He follows Rem and finds her berating Knives for 'investigating' the ship's controls. Rem's breaking a lot of rules concealing the twins.

Page 17. Conrad chats with the twins and decides they're okay. Knives cries with relief that the new human likes them.

Page 20. Conrad keeps the secret and goes back into cryo. Life for the twins and Rem goes on as before until  Knives and Vash see the mysterious figure of a girl and follow her through the ship.

Page 22. They find a completely separate block of the ship, with a flower outside the door. Knives hacks the computer, which has heavy security, and opens "The Report of TESSLA".

Page 26. Medical reports on the girl they saw - a Plant child, like them. She was analysed in the laboratory from the moment she was found. The repeated investigations made her ill.

Pages 30-1. The twins find Tessla's dissected and preserved body in a series of vats.

Page 32. Back to the medical report on Tessla's last months of life, as her body slowly deteriorates until she dies at less than a year of age.

Guess that explains why Rem was so keen to hide the twins from the other crew this time around....

I really want to make a tasteless joke about Tessla coils right here, but I can't think of how to phrase it, so I'll just appreciate that it was Knives who was grateful to be liked by the Patrick Stewart-lookin' engineer.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thinks he looks like Patrick Stewart!

The thing that makes me shiver is Tessla's teeth. Ah oooww. *cringe*

The rotten teeth and the drooling is a particularly nasty image. Good choice of ick there, Nightow!

Compared to Vash, he so is.

Dude, Legato cries less in this manga than Knives.

Oooh. That's amazing. I love his artwork on Tessla, that last page is painful to look upon. (In a good way... as in it's supposed to be painful...) the little details too, like it looks like that's a lilly outside the door. (Lilly being the flower symbolising death.) I love the fact (and this is purely random.) that the english at the bottom says Happy days./END. The end of happy days. Ah, how beautifully apt.
Glad you posted bits of this one! It was an issue I'd always wanted to see.

There's some really great stuff in this issue. But then I say that about nearly all of them XD

Interesting how Knives is obviously the much more insecure and emotional of the twins from this very early stage. No wonder his attempts to manipulate Vash later on don't work - he's assuming the same reactions from Vash that he would have.

No. Won't work. But it'd be good to toss out anyway!

From what snippets of dialogue we get, I don't read Vash as in any way hesitant. Both twins are uncertain as to whether the humans will accept them, though they want them to. But Knives seems to *need* everyone to like him, whereas Vash would *like* everyone to like him, but will be happy as long as some of them do. So even if the rest of the humans hate him, Vash is fine with just having Rem.

Does that make any sense? It seems to fit with what dialogue we get, and with their later actions. Knives rejects humanity because not all of them will treat him well, whereas Vash continues to defend them no matter how badly some of them respond to him. As long as some of them are good people, that's enough for Vash.

It comes down again, I think, to Vash being the more mature of the two. I wonder if Tessla made him grow up, while Knives stayed a child. Something similar happened to my dad and his closest brother when their mom died; Dad grew up too early and my uncle never grew up at all.

I can't answer your Plant questions, I'm afraid. Knives and Vash are clearly brothers because we see Rem find them in the same Plant bulb. Tessla was a separate Plant birth. The only thing we know about Plants for certain is that they were created by humans. We don't know if they're modified humans or just something new built in human form, and without more background knowledge we can't say anything about the connections between Plants.

Knives' reactions to everything come across as extremely immature. 'Some humans do bad things so I'm going to hate *all* humans.' It's a typical, immediate childish response, and one he never gets past. Knives' lack of emotional maturity and coping mechanisms as an adult is utterly consistent with his surface emotional responses seen here as far as I can see.

What a bad surprise for the twins. And Knives never forgot that image, I think.

I don't think Vash did either. Vash just has more perspective.

See the two brothers close, in peace, makes me a little sad...How the twins become enemies, that cutes little boys? is so sad.
