Following on from yesterday's post, the people of North Carolina voted for a law they didn't understand, which means the State now officially cannot recognise common-law marriage of any kind. So what's going to happen in those districts of North Carolina that had already chosen to give benefits to unmarried couples in long term relationships? Will they obey the new state law and cut them off? We await the screaming....

I was very disappointed when I heard how the vote went. Incredible.

If only medical science had a cure for idiocy.

Oh the screaming will be marvellous.

And nearly as sensible as this:

That statement strikes me as so bizarre. The fact that Obama has stood up in support of gay marriage the day after the populace of a swing state rejected it speaks rather highly for his personal integrity trumping his political ambitions.

They're gay people supporting a party which hates their guts and wants to see them dead, poor, jailed or deported.

Of course their words are bizarre. They're bizarre people with the self-awareness of a dead skunk.

I can respect them for being determined and independent enough to try and change the party from the inside, rather than taking the easy option of being a Democrat. But then when they go and say something this partisan and stupid, the respect seems to wither.

When I originally heard about this amendment I was afraid this is what would happen. If any law should be passed, it should be so that wording is clear, concise and easy to understand on any issue up for a vote.

But that would make sense and we can't have that. Instead, amendments like this one will pass and people will be horrified when they get what they voted for. *sighs*

I was rather hoping that the republicans would have shot themselves in the foot here, by making the law so ridiculously broad that it would be voted down. Unfortunately, that would have required the people of North Carolina to pay attention to what the amendment said, not what they were told it said.
