Do I have Hannibal fics waiting for me to read? Why, yes, I do. Did I prove unfaithful and read a True Detective fic instead? Why, yes, I did. And it was SO worth it.
This story is an AU where Rust doesn't quite run away after the fight outside the station, and Marty doesn't quite stop looking for him. 68,000 words of two screwed up men who have supported each other and damaged each other for seven years and who continue to do the same. The author has their personalities and their dialogue patterns down perfectly (oh, how I adore the dialogue and the dry, bitter humour seeping through everything).
I especially love this Marty, who recognises his behaviour patterns and mistakes and tries so hard to be better, and only partly succeeds because yeah, he's still Marty. This is the kind of relationship-focussed fic that can so easily become dull in all the little daily scenes, but the author evades that trap so easily because the quality of the writing and the characterisation and all the detail is just so good.
Marty had always hated the phrase to hit rock bottom . He felt it was a cop out for those too lazy or too incapable of realising when their lives were falling apart. He thought that there was a long fall before bedrock; plenty of time for someone to get their shit together.
Your Name Burnt In My Ceiling on AO3.
