Screw the Governator. Go California!

Cities in California are rushing to introduce local laws banning the declawing of cats, before a state law signed by the Governor preventing them from banning it comes into force in January.

Of course, the problem with bans on a city by city basis is that people who really want to chop off all their pets' toes for fear of injury to their precious leather sofa will take them to another town to get them mutilated. But at least it's a start - and the momentum will gather.

It makes me really fucking sick to see veterinary organisations defending practices like this.The California Veterinary Medical Association have made their priorities very clear - money over animal welfare.

This is the same state that banned people from owning ferrets so I wish I could say that I'm surprised, but I'm not.

I guess in this case I can only blame the Governator so far - he's taking advice from a board who are masquerading as a veterinary organisation. Who cares about cats, as long as some vets are making money from cosmetic surgery performed on unconsenting animals?

Cats come with claws, fur, teeth, tail and personality/attitude pre-installed. If you don't want any of that package, don;t get a cat.

Exactly. If you have pets, you're not going to own an ideal home. Pets will shed hair, tread mud on the carpets, chew or scratch a few things you'd rather they didn't. It's a choice you make when you get a pet, that simple.

You should hear these people talk at length about how much they love their cats. Yeah, they love it so much they'll torture it to keep it, instead of rehome it to someone who'll want it the way it is.

I am curious: Are SoftPaws as nifty as advertised? Or should you just suck up and give your cat stuff to scratch and trim their nails like in the old days?

Soft paws work really well for some cats. Other cats will spend an entire day solid tugging at their claws relentlessly until they all come off XD It's try it and see for each individual cat.

I stick with the nail trimming and cat scratchers myself.
