Chpater 8 is called 'EIBETSU' - 'Last Goodbye'.
Sumire's translation here.
Livio has spent the afternoon lurking around the orphanage grounds. At one point he hears thunder, only it doesn't sound quite right. He's still just sitting around moping at nightfall. Then he hears the sound of cooking, his stomach rumbles and he follows the sound.
He finds Vash eating fried rice. "Yo," says Vash. Livio abruptly rushes out through the other door.

Livio looks around and finds a grave. He runs back to Vash. "Ni... Nicholas!! Wolfwood... where is he!?" Vash looks at him for a moment. "He died. I buried him." (Vash's eyes - damn. How does Nightow do that?)

Livio slumps back against the door-frame. "How!? How...?" He trails off. "You fought him," says Vash. "Shouldn't you know best?" (Ouch score for bitter and pointy Vash!) Livio's looking pretty upset by now. "Not that," says Livio. "That's not what I meant. How can you be so calm and... eat food!!"

Vash turns to look at Livio, and the whole of the left side of his hair is now black. Livio thinks, 'That power. He used it - where?'

Livio thinks back to the 'thunder' he heard earlier, and we get a flashback to Knives' Ark arriving overhead as Vash sits by Wolfwood's body. He's sprouting feathers again....

Vash throws up one of those huge domes of energy, and power flashes between Vash and the Ark. (Not entirely sure if this is all Vash or not. There's one panel in there that makes it look like the Ark might be attacking too, but it's not really clear).

Knives gets a cut along one cheek. (OMG, that bottom panel - so much Vash love!)

Knives wipes the blood away from his cheek and bursts out laughing as the Ark flies onwards, leaving Vash sitting with his feathers, as before - except for the hair.

Vash smiles at Livio. "I'm hungry. How about you?" "I can't...." says Livio. Vash tells him to eat."To protect everyone here - that was his wish. If Knives isn't stopped, it all comes to nothing."

Vash tells Livio again to eat. "Make yourself stronger. We can't screw this up." The two of them spend the night raiding the stores left at the orphanage, and remembering Wolfwood moments.

When dawn comes, Vash reaches into his pocket and produces Wolfwood's handgun and the last vial of Magic Juice. "Take them," he tells Livio. "Don't forget him."

Vash sets the Punisher to stand by Wolfwood's grave. "This way of life is a part of who he was." Sumire's translation gives the last line as 'I don't want his ideals sullied.' But it reads to me that Vash is saying he won't feel ashamed of how Wolfwood lived. 'ore wa sore o hajite hoshiku nai.' Another post-YKO edit?

Livio asks what the plan is now. Vash says the Ark is to the west. He's going after Knives.

I'll probably take a bit of a break now before I start on the next volume! 11 is less action and a lot more talking, and just looking at some of those dialogue-heavy pages is making my translating brain want to curl up and die. But I will do some more scanning and stuff from it, maybe in a week or so. But I won't be doing a chapter a day XD

I like Bitter!Vash. Another welcome difference between anime and manga Vash. Thank you for posting!
omg icon works so much better now.

Date: 2005-02-06 09:10 pm (UTC)I'm very rarely villain-sympathetic. I'm anti-hero sympathetic in a huge way (hey, I started watching Trigun purely becasue of Wolfwood!), but true villains don't often grab me. Muraki is an exception in Yami, and it's not so much that I'm sympathetic, it's more that I can see where he's coming from. And while I can see where Knives is coming from re humans, the things he does to his brother go way beyond my understanding, and that's where he loses me, and any sympathy for his cause I might otherwise have had.

"I don't want you to feel ashamed about this..."
So, there. Another random drive-by unsolicited translation. ^__^

Since you're volunteering your brain XD - which part of the grammar there is implying the 'you' as opposed to just 'I don't want to feel ashamed'? My informal grammar doth suck.

Date: 2005-02-06 06:28 pm (UTC)You can have the damned thing! It's not like I use it anyway. *grins*
The "you" in implied whereas the "I" wouldn't be, in this case. I think Vash is saying this to Wolfwood as an assurance on Vash's part that he'll do whatever it takes...

Date: 2005-02-06 06:31 pm (UTC)It's the "sore o" that tipped me off.
ore wa = I am
sore o = of that
hajite = to be ashamed
hoshikunai = don't want
ore wa sore o hajite hoshiku nai
When you break it down like that, you can see where to stick the "you."
*giggles*

Date: 2005-02-06 06:42 pm (UTC)Pretty much that. Since Vash already says, "ore wa," this is the indicator for the "you." It's a given and is just part of the lovely confusion that's the "norm" in Japanese speech. Wow. Now that you've mentioned it and brought it to my attention, this speech pattern is rather interesting. I just take it for granted that the "you" is there for anyone to see. Can't you see it written there? O.O Slanty eyes are finally good for something! ^___^
