Chpater 8 is called 'EIBETSU' - 'Last Goodbye'.

Sumire's translation here.

Livio has spent the afternoon lurking around the orphanage grounds. At one point he hears thunder, only it doesn't sound quite right. He's still just sitting around moping at nightfall. Then he hears the sound of cooking, his stomach rumbles and he follows the sound.

He finds Vash eating fried rice. "Yo," says Vash. Livio abruptly rushes out through the other door.

Livio looks around and finds a grave. He runs back to Vash. "Ni... Nicholas!! Wolfwood... where is he!?" Vash looks at him for a moment. "He died. I buried him." (Vash's eyes - damn. How does Nightow do that?)

Livio slumps back against the door-frame. "How!? How...?" He trails off. "You fought him," says Vash. "Shouldn't you know best?" (Ouch score for bitter and pointy Vash!) Livio's looking pretty upset by now. "Not that," says Livio. "That's not what I meant. How can you be so calm and... eat food!!"

Vash turns to look at Livio, and the whole of the left side of his hair is now black. Livio thinks, 'That power. He used it - where?'

Livio thinks back to the 'thunder' he heard earlier, and we get a flashback to Knives' Ark arriving overhead as Vash sits by Wolfwood's body. He's sprouting feathers again....

Vash throws up one of those huge domes of energy, and power flashes between Vash and the Ark. (Not entirely sure if this is all Vash or not. There's one panel in there that makes it look like the Ark might be attacking too, but it's not really clear).

Knives gets a cut along one cheek. (OMG, that bottom panel - so much Vash love!)

Knives wipes the blood away from his cheek and bursts out laughing as the Ark flies onwards, leaving Vash sitting with his feathers, as before - except for the hair.

Vash smiles at Livio. "I'm hungry. How about you?" "I can't...." says Livio. Vash tells him to eat."To protect everyone here - that was his wish. If Knives isn't stopped, it all comes to nothing."

Vash tells Livio again to eat. "Make yourself stronger. We can't screw this up." The two of them spend the night raiding the stores left at the orphanage, and remembering Wolfwood moments.

When dawn comes, Vash reaches into his pocket and produces Wolfwood's handgun and the last vial of Magic Juice. "Take them," he tells Livio. "Don't forget him."

Vash sets the Punisher to stand by Wolfwood's grave. "This way of life is a part of who he was." Sumire's translation gives the last line as 'I don't want his ideals sullied.' But it reads to me that Vash is saying he won't feel ashamed of how Wolfwood lived. 'ore wa sore o hajite hoshiku nai.' Another post-YKO edit?

Livio asks what the plan is now. Vash says the Ark is to the west. He's going after Knives.

I'll probably take a bit of a break now before I start on the next volume! 11 is less action and a lot more talking, and just looking at some of those dialogue-heavy pages is making my translating brain want to curl up and die. But I will do some more scanning and stuff from it, maybe in a week or so. But I won't be doing a chapter a day XD

I like Bitter!Vash.

Yeah, I love him. Even in the manga, he doesn't stick the verbal claws out too often, but he can be really cutting when he does.

omg icon works so much better now.

Yeah, I like that bit too. Vash NEEDS to get bitter and bitchy sometimes, yanno? And maybe it's wrong but I find his mostly-black hair to be teh sexy.

Too right he does! I like the black hair a lot too, but I always did go more for dark hair than blonds XD

Wow, great stuff. I love that empty look on Vash's face near the beginning. My heart really bleeds for him. :sniff: It's all very sad and beautiful. I've made a lot of Icon's from these Scans. Would you like them?

I wouldn't mind taking a look :-) I've got some plans of my own for more icons, but somehow I just haven't made the time! I know I found out once before how to check out all people's user icons....

It's a great sequence but that panel-- it's the framing, it's the subject, it's everything. Poor Vash. So alone.

From: [identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com
It is really well done with the framing, I agree. And yeah, he is. *sniff*

Yeah, that little flashback is just so very them, it's gorgeous.

And Vash - it's all the lines round the eyes. Just that one small panel where he gives Livio Wolfwood's gun - yow.

The more I see, the more I feel like the ending of the series is going to be dreadfully tragic. Like both twins keeling over at the same time. *sigh* I cam't wait to see the next scans, but at the same time, I'm like, omfg no @_@!

Well, unlike you, I'll be only too pleased to see Knives get his XD He deserves everything he's got coming for being such a bastard to Vash! But no, I don't think there's going to be anything close to a happy ending, from anyone's point of view.

Terrible things he did to Vash? What about the terrible things Vash did to him? I think if you weigh it out, there's just as much emotional pain in it for both of them. Of course, I'm villian-sympathetic and no one listens to me anyway, so x___x

Date: 2005-02-06 09:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com
I think the difference is in the intentions. There *is* just as much emotional pain for both of them, I agree, but Vash never deliberately set out to torture his brother, just to disagree with him.

I'm very rarely villain-sympathetic. I'm anti-hero sympathetic in a huge way (hey, I started watching Trigun purely becasue of Wolfwood!), but true villains don't often grab me. Muraki is an exception in Yami, and it's not so much that I'm sympathetic, it's more that I can see where he's coming from. And while I can see where Knives is coming from re humans, the things he does to his brother go way beyond my understanding, and that's where he loses me, and any sympathy for his cause I might otherwise have had.

From: [identity profile] solo.livejournal.com
You can see where Muraki's coming from? One day you'll have to explain it to me, because apart from that sad/freaky thing with the head, I don't get him at all and am really puzzled by how much time so many people have for him.

From: [identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com
I find him interesting. He has an obsession that he's devoted half his life to achieving, and he's turned his intelligence whole-heartedly to whatever it takes to get what he wants. Medicine, magic? No problem, he'll do those, and he'll do them well</>. I can empathise with that. And then I can see how that progressive slide into killing could have happened, the excuses he would have used to justify it to himself. In that way, I find him much easier to 'get' than Seishirou, because I have a starting point, a way into his head.

Date: 2005-02-08 01:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] solo.livejournal.com
Regarding Seishirou, well, yes. Pretty much anybody is easier to 'get' than he is. No contest there. :-/

Still sniffling over Wolfwood, dammit.

ore wa sore o hajite hoshiku nai

"I don't want you to feel ashamed about this..."

So, there. Another random drive-by unsolicited translation. ^__^

Still sniffling over Wolfwood, dammit.

Yeah. *sob*

Since you're volunteering your brain XD - which part of the grammar there is implying the 'you' as opposed to just 'I don't want to feel ashamed'? My informal grammar doth suck.

From: [identity profile] tameiki.livejournal.com
Since you're volunteering your brain

You can have the damned thing! It's not like I use it anyway. *grins*

The "you" in implied whereas the "I" wouldn't be, in this case. I think Vash is saying this to Wolfwood as an assurance on Vash's part that he'll do whatever it takes...

Date: 2005-02-06 06:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tameiki.livejournal.com
It would also help if I answered your question, too.

It's the "sore o" that tipped me off.

ore wa = I am

sore o = of that

hajite = to be ashamed

hoshikunai = don't want

ore wa sore o hajite hoshiku nai

When you break it down like that, you can see where to stick the "you."

*giggles*

Date: 2005-02-06 06:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com
Yeah, so in the end there actually isn't any difference here to distinguish between 'I don't want to be ashamed of that' and 'I don't want *you* to be ashamed of that'? You're intuiting it from your knowledge of usage rather than there being a pointer in what's actually written?

Date: 2005-02-06 06:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tameiki.livejournal.com
You're intuiting it from your knowledge of usage rather than there being a pointer in what's actually written?

Pretty much that. Since Vash already says, "ore wa," this is the indicator for the "you." It's a given and is just part of the lovely confusion that's the "norm" in Japanese speech. Wow. Now that you've mentioned it and brought it to my attention, this speech pattern is rather interesting. I just take it for granted that the "you" is there for anyone to see. Can't you see it written there? O.O Slanty eyes are finally good for something! ^___^

Date: 2005-02-06 06:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com
Ah, gotcha! So if he were saying 'I don't want to be ashamed of that' it would just be 'sore o hajite hoshiku nai' because the 'ore wa' would be unnecessary. I see now - I think XD
