I think he's bi, in regard to the interest he shows in women, but that he (maybe even being unable to admit it to himself until Wolfwood) prefers men.
(though really? I still think it's a lot easier to read Vash x Meryl as one-sided love on Meryl's part and one-sided friendship on Vash's. I'm sorry, but that's one OTP I'll never really get into, frankly because so much of it seems to be written from a heterosexual!saint!Vash perspective, which makes me want to whimper, and because so many writers seem to take for granted that Vash is both head-over-heels in love with her AND has apparently forgotten that Wolfwood even existed. I don't hate it and I don't fight with anyone who ships it anymore, but I can't bring myself to like and read it, which is a shame since that's what the fandom produces most of anymore.)
