Cinema evening with [livejournal.com profile] darthhellokitty and [livejournal.com profile] king_chiron, and damn! I seriously can't remember the last time I saw a film that made me laugh so much. There were scenes that had me creasing up for five whole minutes, and giggling afterwards whenever I thought of them, and I was trying so hard not to laugh, because I was missing more things all the time I was crying and choking for air.

It takes a little while to build up and get going, but it's one of the best pastiches I've seen in ages, and it's poking fun at so many things, I can't begin to list them. And, yes, it's thoroughly sick in places, gloriously so, but there's a whole lot more going on than that too.

And then we ate at Johnny Rockets afterwards, mainly because the shopping malls were crawling and all the restaurants had waiting times. I can say in complete truthfulness that I've never before eaten somewhere where the service staff have stopped periodically to put on dance performances. We were 'treated' to mime-alongs of Love Shack and Stayin' Alive, complete with another staff number turning the lights on and off to the beat. It was kind of like Yaoi Con, only without the stripping. Or the talent.

Whatever those people were being paid, it wasn't enough.

That was seriously, fall-over-unable-to-breathe funny, and better than just funny, it was WITTY. :-) And I was hopping up and down in my seat wondering what would happen next!

And sure enough, IMDB has a quotes page, although I think they could have done better: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373469/quotes

The Johnny Rockets dance revue was surreal. Not sure I enjoyed it, but I'm glad I saw it or I'd never believe it.

At least two of those quotes are misquotes, and they're missing huge amounts! But if they really started quoting, they'd have to include about half the script XD

The Johnny Rockets experience wasn't the sort of thing you'd expect to happen anywhere, was it, really? But it had amusement value if nothing else :-)

When we were on our cruise, we ate at the Johnny Rockets. It was so much fun to watch the staff before. Even the cook behind the counter was banging utensils on the grill. My favorite was when they'd sing YMCA. The fun thing about the cruise staff was that they were from all different countries. Mostly the poor European and Caribbean ones. They had so much fun laughing at themselves. ^__^

You'd expect that kind of thing more on a cruise ship, though. Between the four of us, we'd eaten at several Johnny Rockets in various different places, and this was the first dance experience!

Maybe the idea's spreading.... save us!

Yeah, we discussed that place too XD We'd never been, but the other two have apparently suffered it.

That's just ... degrading. How many pieces of flair did they have to wear?

I went to see KKBB with a couple of people who really disliked the ultra-arch tone of the whole thing, but I thought it was brilliant, especially the bits where RDJr (raaaar) addressses the audience directly in VO. He can break down MY fourth wall whenever he wants...

Also? Robert Downey Jr. RAAAAR! ::molests::

Ah, the mega-delayed comment notifications continue! No, I wasn't ignoring you honey!

I didn't realise the film was already out in the UK back in November - that was quick. I think there were a couple of places where that chatting-to-the-audience narrative wasn't quite pulled off, but most of the time it worked; and some of it was just so damn funny, I'd forgive it anything :-)

RDJr just isn't pushing my buttons, I'm afraid, but his character was really cute and sweet, I'll grant you.
