I'm sure it was scarier for Eric than it was for me! I had that brief 'oh shit' moment when I realised, but then I gave him my reg, and he has air, and we both know how to do this, so no drama. Having enough air for two of you is built into the system - you're supposed to make sure you still have extra air when you get back to the surface so that you have some for a friend along the way if needed. Though obviously Eric failed at that!
Sign language would be SO useful. I've seen video of deaf divers just chatting away underwater, and thought damn what a great idea! But of course it's not that useful unless everyone does it.
