The Hood Canal

The Hood Canal is a very bizarre name, because it's not remotely a canal, it's a fjord. Maybe someone meant to call it the Hood Channel back in the 18th century and someone wrote it down wrong? Anyway, I went to the Hood Canal fjord last week for a couple of days of diving. Sea and mountains, it's very pretty!
The day I drove over was pretty miserable. It started out pouring and windy. By the time I got the area, the clouds were breaking up and the sun emerging, but there was still a very stiff wind when I got out of the car!
Post-storm from Highway 106 near the town of Union.

The Skokomish River estuary at low tide.

The next morning was a very different experience, fortunately, with clear skies and the sea as still as a millpond - a much better diving day!
Views from the dock at Hoodsport.

Heading north along the fjord, with the Olympic mountains beyond.

The next day, and a little more cloud started to creep back in over the mountains.

About to get back onto the boat after the second dive - that's me in the blue face mask with the yellow hoses.

Heading back home on Friday, with photos near Twanoh State Park, and low tide once more.

View north from Southworth ferry dock, waiting for the boat back to Seattle.

A pigeon guillemot playing around in the shallows.

And looking south from the ferry dock, past Point Southworth to Vashon Island.

The wetaher was definitely kind to us - the stormy day on the way out would definitely have cancelled our diving if it had come a day later, but it all worked out well :-)
