To make a very long story short, over the last few years my SO developed a snoring issue. After putting up with chronic sleep deprivation for close to three years while we tried various things that didn't work, I bailed five months ago and now we sleep in separate bedrooms.
There are pros and cons to either bedroom. The master bedroom is bigger and has the amazing view. It's also directly beneath the roof, so on nights when there's rain hammering on the roof and windows, the downstairs bedroom is much quieter. As a consequence, we switch bedrooms periodically, and this has revealed some interesting things about the cats.
Kuro sleeps with me. This is no great surprise, as he's always slept on my side of the bed leaning against me, and the SO's complained for 15 years that Kuro only ever sits on his lap when I'm gone for a week and Kuro gets desperate. Every now and then, Kuro will sleep on Tom's bed for half a night before he joins me. Tom is convinced this has nothing to do with him, and everything to do with Kuro refusing to cede anywhere in the house to the voids and insisting he still has the right to be wherever he pleases. Knowing the cats, I think he's probably right...
Yami always sleeps with Tom. She's not as quick on the uptake as Kuro, though, so when we switch bedrooms, I may get the pleasure of her company for a night or two before she decides that no, this isn't quite right, and she goes off and relocates Tom.
Neko sleeps in the master bedroom, regardless of which human occupies it. The second bedroom has a different quilt which is artificial and supposedly more dust mite repellent. It crinkles a bit when a cat walks on it, and I don't think Neko likes that. The person sleeping in the second bedroom is often visited by Neko during the early hours of the morning - he will stroll across the pillows screaming hello, then five minutes later he disappears again. No amount of stroking will convince him to sleep on that quilt.
This means that half the time, Neko is sharing a bed with Kuro and half the time he's sharing a bed with his sister. When he's sharing with Kuro, he's a perfectly civilised and polite bed partner who sleeps quietly on his own half. When he's sharing with his sister, he'll hurl himself down practically on top of her to sleep, then wake up several times a night squeaking and start bugging her to play with him, which she Does Not Like At All, because she's busy sleeping. And then the squeaking and the subsequent wriggling and wrestling disturbs whichever human is present as well. It's probably fortunate that happens a lot more to the SO than to me!
Have a gratuitous photo of the void cats enjoying a patch of sun :-)
