tiggymalvern: (charles-erik good isn't it?)

Yesterday was relatively mild and precipitation-free and I wasn't working, so I headed up to the mountains. The last of our snow disappeared mid-week, and I went out hunting for more.

Gold Creek is close to Snoqualmie Pass at an elevation of around 3000 feet. When I got there at 10.30am, it was snowing lightly. That stopped after about an hour, then resumed when I was almost back to the car.

Heading towards Gold Creek from the parking area.

In late February it's not cold enough for moving water to freeze, and Gold Creek is still there to be found.

Where Gold Creek flows into Gold Creek Pond, there's a patch of open water before the freeze kicks in.

Sometimes the surrounding mountains emerged from the low cloud.

In summer, there's a path that loops around Gold Creek pond. In winter, there still is, but people have to figure out the route for themselves.

Gold Creek pond with the mountains beyond.

You know how deep the snow is when the path goes up past the top of the sign.

I think this one's more of a summer cabin than a ski chalet.

Snow, trees and a hint of sun.

North of the pond, further up Gold Creek basin, with the mountains looming over the trail.

And the further north you go, the fewer people have been there.

I'm a lazy snowshoer - when I got to the point where I was sinking in at least 6 inches (15cm) with every step, even with the snowshoes, that's the point where I turned around and headed back to the car. Breaking trail through fresh powder is too much like hard work!

In other news, it might seem like I haven't done any diving over the last few months, but I have, I swear. I just didn't come back with any worthy video. In December, I dived the old sunken I-90 bridge in Lake Washington, which was pretty awesome, but I left the camera in the car, and went 'Bollocks!' as my dive buddies and I were wading in. Then I dived Edmonds Underwater Park just before the New Year, took the camera, and didn't see anything too thrilling. I got maybe a minute of interesting footage and figured I would combine it with another dive to make it worthwhile. Which would have been the dive I did at Three Tree in January on an absolutely gorgeous day with sun and flat blue ocean, but I had a camera malfunction after one video shot, and it refused to turn on again.

I have a dive planned next weekend (weather permitting) - maybe that will be the one where I actually make a video...

I love how tall the snow is there, and the mountains in the clouds are just lovely.

This is all so gorgeous. I can't imagine walking in snow that deep!
