And yeah, re: Hannibal and fences. And I also think there's a really important asymmetric element to their dynamic in play that probably makes it ultimately harder for Hannibal to settle into, that... frankly, Will has a caprice to him and to his history of actions taken that Hannibal doesn't. Hannibal really only demonstrated something similar kind of early in their history of betrayals - putting Will in prison and then deciding he couldn't stand leaving him there. Hannibal's later violence toward Will is all in pretty much direct reaction to Will's own betrayals. Whereas Will spends so much of their history together at war with himself, to the point where it's never clear which side of him will win a given skirmish until the moment he actually makes the choice.
I think this is something you tacitly noted in some of your other fic that I've been reading (particularly Out of the Depths) - which, by the way, you're about to have a small avalanche of commentary on AO3 from me, probably in the next few days - with Will realizing that his plans about Hannibal rarely survive actual contact with Hannibal.
