I read a review of the Hannibal TV series which said the real arc plot isn't Will vs Hannibal, it's Will Graham vs Will Graham. There's definitely a case to be made for that (it certainly seems to be the plot of season three). This is mostly that video, though some other stuff crept in too.
And I have to say, this vid makes me really happy - it's the first fanvid I've ever made that actually looks close to the idea I had in my head when I started it. Although it would have been done over a week ago, if I hadn't had to fight some very annoying de-interlacing bugs for a couple of sequences. I've literally spent two days this week trying to fix the edit for one line of the song. It's still not perfect, but I doubt most people will notice the bugginess that made it through. And annoyingly, youtube has restricted me to 720p HD, not the 1080 I uploaded, so it doesn't look as good in some of the transitions as my version.
Hannibal TV series, so warnings for blood, violence and pretentiousness.
Making this vid also reminded me of a comment by
goldenusagi, who said, 'The show really should not making becoming a murderer look so attractive.' There might be a case to be made for that too. Oh, Will Graham, you drag us all along with you into your emotional train crash.
And now that the vid is out of my head, I can get back to finishing that fanfic that's three quarters done...

Date: 2016-09-04 07:28 pm (UTC)Hannibal's a tough one to recommend. The cinematography is great, the whole show looks stunning. The writing is fantastic - I genuinely think season two is probably the most perfectly crafted season of any show I've ever seen. The pacing of that season is spot on, and there's not a single line of filler dialogue in the whole thirteen episodes. Everything means something. The entire writing team loved what they were doing, when you hear them talk; I don't think Bryan Fuller hired one person who was just looking to pay the mortgage, and it shows.
It is psychologically draining, though. The SO never did watch season three in the end, he said it was just too hard to watch, and he didn't mean the blood and gore. There's one scene in season three that I have to brace myself for every time, because it induces in me such intense emotional screaming. It's not something you can watch to chill out and relax.
But then looking back through my long fannish history, that's apparently what makes me a hardcore fan of something, rather than just liking it. Trigun wouldn't be the same if Wolfwood's death wasn't both inevitable and awful, Due South is as brilliant as it is because they mix up the comedy fluff with stories like Victoria's Secret that rip out my heart with a spoon. It holds true going all the way back to my first pre-internet fandom of Blake's 7, and its final massacre of the entire cast. I seem to fall in love hardest with shows that are the emotional equivalent of being dragged over a barbed wire fence, and quite what that says about me, I'll think about some other time!

Definitely looking for new stuff to watch. Will I find my Hannibal??

That show isn't afraid to mix things up and have characters and their situations evolve, which I like. It does go to some dark places, but not like Hannibal does!
Agent Carter is the only thing I've seen lately that was genuinely good, fun entertainment, without much in the way of dark edges.
