Chapter Three - Kodoku no ou (The King of Loneliness)

Sumire's full translation is here.

Page 67. Rem explains everything to both the kids. How she and Conrad had opposed the experiments on Tessla, and been over-ruled. How she hid them from the other crew to protect them.

Page 69. Knives, crying, hugs Rem and says, "There's so much we have to do so it never happens again."

Page 72. Vash follows Knives through the ship. Knives is all shadowed and sinister....

Page 74. Everything goes on as before, with Rem teaching the kids, who seem happy. I love that chess scene with Knives all smug and Vash looking so humphy :-)

Page 75. Don't they look so incredibly sweet at the top there? But Knives wakes up and goes creeping off in the night.

Page 77. Knives sits tapping away at the main computer terminal, and chews his thumb until it bleeds.

Pages 80-1. And then we switch to Knives standing on the planet, arms outstretched as the ships crash all around him.

Page 82. Vash rages at Knives, knowing exactly what he's done, and Knives kicks him in the teeth.

Page 85. Back to the present, and Knives kneeling before a row of Plant bulbs, telling them he's sorry so many Plants died in the Fall.

Pages 90-1. Knives reaches out to one of the Plant Angels, and she breaks through the glass of the bulb and begins to merge with him. Damn, this is such a beautifully drawn spread, with Knives' outline and his wings, and his face down there at the bottom left.

Pages 92-3. Legato and Elendira watch in shock as Knives forms a giant Angel Arm that incorporates the other Plant, and a beam of light shoots straight up into the sky....

So Knives discovers how to use his power without risking more black hair - he simply borrows it from someone else. The planet's in trouble again....

Oh this has to contain some of my favourite scans yet! That spread with Knives murging was wonderful! I think it might be one of my favorite Nightow pictures yet! And the one where he's bowing to the plants... his cloak swirling around him... this is a wonderful in the sense of Knives characteration. (The title is wonderfully telling, I think) thanks so much for posting it... even though you're not a Knives fan.
Oh, and notice how, in the middle when the ships are falling, they're nearly grown up? Very different from the Anime that. I hope one day we learn what happened just before the fall... I'd like to see what happened to Rem. I mean, I know she's dead but how she died is actually quite an important concept in the form of Vash characterisation, I think.
Oh, and I love that bit showing their daily lives. You're right, the bit with them playing chess is SO cute!!!

I might not fangirl Knives, but he's a huge part of the Trigun story and the biggest influence on the characters I do fangirl. Plus, I can always appreciate a damn nice piece of art, whatever the subject. Almost.

notice how, in the middle when the ships are falling, they're nearly grown up?

I'm not actually convinced that's intentional. I think we're meant to assume that what Knives does in the night causes the crash, and some of the later scans I've seen of stuff that happens down on the planet, like when Vash loses his arm, they still look very young. Nightow just seems to inevitably draw them looking older when they're angry or crazy. Vash looked a lot older in that scene when he was stabbing Rem too.

I hope one day we learn what happened just before the fall.

I'm assuming that happened very much like the anime. Nightow's skipped how the kids got down to the planet and why Rem didn't make it with them, and I figure there's no point in him rehashing what we've all already seen. Unless Nightow later decides to show us otherwise, I'll stick with that as my default.

Nice to see that Knives is asking for forgiveness before stealing someone else's life-energy and uh...blowing his wad into the sky?

I have to clean my keyboard of coffee stains now, thankyou very much. XD

I think that's probably an understatement! XD Natural sibling rivalry has been somewhat enhanced over the decades....

And Vash doesn't have to boast, he just has to keep getting in the way and proving it XD

And that then leads into that discussion involving Knive's third "gun" :3

That spread with him merging with the Plant? Beautiful. And I like how the cloak forms wings on page 85.

Also? That pose Nightow used when the ships are crashing, is so hard to pull off well. Kudos! I envy his layout skills.

I haven't attempted to draw a person since I was about eight, so I'll take your highly qualified word on that one! Interesting to know.

So with you on the art envy. I can produce a half-passable landscape if I spend weeks on it *sigh*

I find it interesting that while Knives doesn't want the humans exploiting the Plants, he's perfectly willing to exploit them himself.

Oh, yeah. And then there's the start of 8. Knives has one of those highly flexible moralities going on....

The two pager with the wings is one of my favorites. But I do think I drew it better. tsk, tsk, Mr.Nightow - your hatching pen lines are showing. :O
Thanks for posting all the scans - it's really cleared the gap I've had in the storyline (since I haven't seen anything but what's online) and it's going to help a lot with writing. *plots*

But I do think I drew it better.

Link me! Link me!

Very few mangaka ever draw what I'd consider to be really fantastic art, but given the time constraints on them to produce 30 pages or so every month, I'm amazed at anything more than outline scribbles....

it's going to help a lot with writing. *plots*

This is why I exist, doncha know? The rest of my life has just been leading up to services to Trigun fandom :-)

I'll have to find it and scan it. I've been packing up everything for my move in May, so all my shit is like .. well, more thrown around than it usually is.

Woohoo, I'm so glad! *dance*

Better than the very true creator? the father of the creature? the man who knows more than anybody of us to Vash and Knives????
Woa, what a selfconfidence.
