Iron Widow
May. 13th, 2023 08:33 pmFar behind the times and the hype, I finally got around to reading Iron Widow. Amazingly, for a book I'd heard so much about, I wasn't disappointed.
The set-up is great, with the combination of bastardised Chinese history-culture and alien mecha. It's really well devised and all the societal rules make sense within that context. The central polycule deal is interesting, and the book goes about as far with that as you could expect a YA novel that had any chance at all of getting published to go. Which isn't actually that far, but understandable, and I was expecting it to cop out a little sooner even than it did, so kudos to the author for that.
The twist at the end I was absolutely NOT expecting, and that makes a very interesting set up for the sequel. Which I'm looking forward to reading, but won't buy until a paperback edition comes out, because who has enough shelf space for hardbacks?
