At World's End
May. 25th, 2007 04:07 pmWent to see the new Pirates film last night because it had to be done. And it had to be done before the start of SIFF today, when the idea of having time to go and see mainstream films becomes laughable XD
I liked it. Not as much as the first, but vastly better than the second with all that stupid crappy filler when we'd rather have been getting on with the plot, thanks. And Disney seem to have remembered that their main target audience isn't twelve. Yes, there are still moments of slapstick in there, but they are mostly kept to moments and not entire drawn-out sequences. And there's a return to the feel of the first film in having a few scenes that are genuinely eerie.
The film doesn't feel over-long despite the 2.45 running time, and its main flaw is that there are too many characters with interesting back-stories and conflicting motivations for the plot to deal adequately with all of them. The result is stars of the calibre of Chow Yun-Fat being completely wasted - why introduce the character, with his history with Jack, and then not explore it? And I wanted to know more about Calypso and Davy Jones and what really went on between them, but there was never going to be chance. Which makes the time wasted in the second film with stupid cannibal chases all the more annoying.
( And now for the bit with spoilers )
