The anime Midvalley is just too much Legato's yes-boy for me to find him interesting. He does as he's told, that's all. It's interesting here that after they've been shooting at one another, Midvalley is willing to lower his gun and talk - he knows Wolfwood very well, and assumes he can still trust him even though they haven't met up in a while and things have changed.
Legato's up and about as of part way through TriMax 11. It's certainly beyond the realms of an ordinary human, but the Trigun manga is full of crazy medical technology. Wolfwood can sustain multiple chest wounds and be fine in a couple of days, and then there's Livio. I wouldn't say it's beyond the technology that Knives has access to to fix Legato. In fact, I'm sure he could have fixed him much sooner, but chose not to as punishment.
