Chapter Three - 'SOUSHITSU' (LOSS)

Sumire's translation is here for the details.

Page 63. Me indulging the Vash love again.

Page 64. Midvalley takes about ten seconds to work out that Wolfwood has genuinely switched sides on him. He seems to know him rather well....

Page 66. Milly fires again at Midvalley, who sets off an explosion and disappears in the smoke.

Page 70. Hopperd has Vash trapped beneath his enormous shield, on top of Meryl's elevator prison. And the first feathers appear....

Page 76. The July flashback starts, with Hopperd seeing all of it. Vash meets up with Knives in the usual conditions of brotherly affection.

Page 77. Knives attacks Vash with an Angel blade and imprisons him.

Page 78. Knives has Vash drugged and studied and gets the interesting news - Vash has the potential to be stronger than he is.

Page 79. In the present, Meryl screams as the feathers break through the top of her cage.

Page 80. Back to July, presumably after Vash has been released, and he's beginning to turn Angel, to his own horror.

Page 84. Hopperd looking traumatised as he sees more through Vash's feathers. Knives is bitching at Vash again.

Page 87. Vash thinks of his friends in July as he fights both Knives and his own spreading power.

Page 89. Hopperd watches the memories in horror as Vash finally loses it - I love that panel of the completely blank eye - and blasts Knives.

Pages 90-1. The town of July gets blown away too...

Page 92. ...and Hopperd screams as he relives the death of his beloved blind girl.

I feel kind of sorry for Midvalley in this one. He had one ally through all of this, one person he was scheming with to get out, and now Wolfwood's bailed on him. That's got to be a harsh realisation.

I think Knives finds it actively frustrating that Vash has so much potential and refuses to use it. He's clearly pushing Vash in this chapter to use that energy, even though there's a significant risk Vash will turn it on him. Later, of course, he gets round the problem by creating a gestalt and drawing on the power of other Plants, so poor Vash doesn't stand much chance. Knives honestly doesn't seem to consider Vash a serious threat at any point, presumably because of Vash's intrinsically non-violent tendencies.
