We went to see a performance of The Comedy of Errors yesterday in Volunteer Park with [livejournal.com profile] king_chiron, [livejournal.com profile] darthhellokitty and [livejournal.com profile] mamishka. It was a crazy, gender-swapped production, with all the female roles played by men in increasingly bad, OTT drag, the whole thing 100% barking mad and brilliantly funny. They had a great cast, who really worked the comic timing for the main part, and they thoroughly abused the Shakespeare with fun little asides and audience participation moments that were not in the original script....

A couple of weeks ago we went to see the same company's King John in Discovery Park, which was interesting to catch as it is one of Shakespeare's least produced plays. Obviously the serious play was not quite as ridiculously entertaining, but it's nice to sit in the sun with friends on a summer afternoon :-)

The company produce two plays every summer - I missed last summer's, I must be sure to make the effort to go next year.

That sounds awesome! Did the girls get to be in the male roles too?

Yes, they did. They didn't look half as silly as the bearded ladies though XD

I was actually quite impressed by the women - they did a very credible job of sweeping the larger guys off their feet and carrying them briefly!

Well, the comedies and the boring(=bad) ones, yes. There are some that should definitely be left sacrosanct!

I can think of a few in college that would definitely have been a step up.

It was a lot of fun and we'll have to add that to the annual schedule along with SIFF, Hump and SEAF.

I always forget to check for those things, so I'm glad you're around to remind me :-)
