Chapter Seven - Wolfwood

Another one where it was a real hassle deciding which bits to scan, because there's something in the expressions somewhere on just about every page....

Sumire's translation here. No real changes, though I've translated a bit more literally in a couple of places than she seems to have done.

Flashback to Wolfwood leaving the orphage, and looking pretty miserable about it as everyone calls out advice and good wishes. Then Aunt Melanie and the other kids start throwing bits of paper cut up like confetti, and he looks back and smiles. Wolfwood's thinking how the orphanage was his only paradise, protected from the miserable world outside. It's been six years since he left (yeah, Renet - that's looking down the more pessimistic end of those calculations we did....).
Brad's ship has landed nearby. (Sumire's p93)

Aunt Melanie and the kids come creeping cautiously out of the orphanage. And there's Wolfwood, and blood and bodies everywhere, and one of the kids starts screaming and others are crying.

Vash jumps right in. "Wait a second, everyone!! Just listen!!" Wolfwood tells him not to bother, it's okay, kids shouldn't be seeing this. He's thinking how he's a murderer, like a monster to them.
Livio stays well out of sight. If I were him, I wouldn't exactly be in a hurry to see Aunt Melanie either....

Brad comes running over to tell Vash that Knives' Ark is on the way, and they need to clear out fast. He and Aunt Melanie organise the kids and sort out the essentials they need to take from the orphanage. Aunt Melanie spots a sack in one of the cupboards she's looking through.

Wolfwood tells Aunt Melanie that if the kids ask questions she has to lie to them, say it wasn't him. The kids are starting to talk, of course - they heard Aunt Melanie call him Nicholas and the older ones are wondering if this old guy who kills people could possibly be their 'big brother Nico'. Vash is annoyed with Wolfwood, loudly demanding if he's really okay with all of this. Wolfwood merely answers that the ship's about to leave. (Sumire's p99)

Vash only gets angrier, pointing out that this is hardly the time for Wolfwood to be acting like an idiot. (Sumire's used 'hesitate' in her translation - the same word can also mean 'be misguided', which I think is probably closer to Vash's sentiment.) Wolfwood punches Vash and opens his fist to show him the assassin's coins. "See, Tongari? These are my true colours. Don't be stupid about it. You must understand?"

They argue about it some more, loudly, as these guys always do. Livio starts to intervene very briefly and then decides it's actually a really bad idea and heads off fast *g*. But there's no way in hell Wolfwood's getting on that ship and it leaves without them.

Vash asks again as he trails after Wolfwood, "Is this really okay?" "Yeah. I'm satisfied." Then Wolfwood adds, "I'm grateful to you too, you know?" Vash goes all blushy and stammery. "I didn't really mean it!" says Wolfwood. "I was only saying it to be polite!"  In the bottom panel, Wolfwood suggests they have a drink together - it's been a while since they've done that. (Wonder what he's found to drink in the orphanage? Cooking sherry? *g* It's called 'Bride' whatever it is!) (Sumire's p103)

There's a sofa left in what used to be a room of the orphanage before that bit collapsed. Wolfwood pours them drinks and they clink glasses.

"Smile, Tongari," Wolfwood says. "You still have a good way of smiling." Not much chance of that right now....

Wolfwood thinks back to when they first met. "I said your smile was hollow. I thought..." Vash cuts him off: "Hey... Wolfwood, don't say anything stupid." Absolutely no dying confessions wanted here. And Vash is thinking, 'Ah, God, God, please grant me just one thing.' Oh, that expression....  (Sumire's p107)

(Sumire has attributed that last thought to Wolfwood - I'm sure that's wrong. It's consistent in the Trigun manga that whoever's in the picture where the thought starts is the one doing the thinking, and I see no reason for that to change now.)

Bits of paper start floating down from the sky.

The kids are throwing it from the ship as it flies overhead.

Aunt Melanie has ignored what Wolfwood said and told the kids the truth. After Wolfwood left the orphanage, the kids cut up more paper and said they'd keep it for when he came back. That's what was in the sack Aunt Melanie found. So now he's back, and they stick to the plan and throw the paper.

'Welcome home' is the thought.

Wolfwood cries out and there's a tear on his cheek, and a few moments later his head droops.

The bottle and the glass hit the floor.

And then there's Livio and there's Vash.

And the Ark appears overhead....

Damn, how I ache for Vash.

This chapter actually makes me feel sad about Wolfwood, rather than cackle like I did at the time. (Because the fight was so damn long and getting kinda boring and also because I enjoy smashing the hopes of the people who magically resurrect Wolfie in fics because "he lives in the manga and the anime fucked it up by killing him." AHAHAHA! ahem.)

Oh, don't get me started on the Wolfwood resurrection fics, or the 'he just didn't die' fics, and all the rest of that crap. It's canon folks, deal! If you want to make it genuinely plausible as an AU, then go for it. Otherwise - pffft!

Cackling seems a bit harsh as a reaction, though *g*. I mean, I don't actually feel all that bad for Wolfwood - it's not like he had any expectations of a long life and a good end. But poor Vash doesn't deserve any more of this crap, dammit! *sniff*

I like fics that work with canon to keep him alive, like Sand & Light--it was plausible that he was still alive there. Actually, that fic is probably one of the most realistic post-series fics. And Rainjewel's Wolfwood/Meryl fic is good because it doesn't just go "OMG NO HE IS ALIVE", it asks "Well, what if he hadn't died?" That stuff works. Saying "Oh Vash just forgot to check for a pulse does not." So that makes...uh, two fics where he lives that work. ^_^;

Hee, it was pretty harsh. In my defense, I knew nothing about the circumstances and didn't get any scans. And I'm sniffling now! That counts, right? And yeah, totally hurting for Vash. The poor guy is just getting a raw deal, and I'm not that hopeful that it's going to get much better. At least he got a knuckle-kiss. 0:)

Basically, yeah *g*. The one that really bugs me that I see over and over is the one where Vash rushes him off to a trauma surgeon who saves him. This would be the trauma surgeon who happens to still be in one of those deserted towns, right? And even worse, those fics always end in declarations of the undying love type, which just makes me heave.

At least he got a knuckle-kiss. 0:)

Yeah, he's still got a lot of friends, luckily. They're just not the same kind of friends :-(

Right, the trauma surgeon was hiding in the basement or sommat. Right. WTF ever. Dude, even if Wolfwood lives, he's gonna be a bad lay for a while, what with not being able to move due to the MASSIVE GUT WOUND.

Yeah, he's still got a lot of friends, luckily. They're just not the same kind of friends :-(

But they could be! In the future! Because now Vash can live on, always remembering his best friend Nicholas and trying to be happy because Wolfwood would want him too! And there will be puppies and kittens and baby guinea pigs!

*snort* It really staggers me the number of people who fail to take that kind of thing into account in fics. Pain and major surgery? So not sexy.

But they could be! In the future!

Oh, yeah, once Knives has had his arse kicked and Vash doesn't have to worry about everybody always dying any more. Assuming Vash is still alive himself at that point, of course....

That could make a pretty good humorous spoof on gratuitous pronfics, you have to admit.

I'm just not optimistic that the rescue ships won't arrive and Vash nobly stays alone on the planet to save the escaping humans from Knives' wrath or some shit.

Vash is going to do something stupid and noble, that's pretty much guaranteed, yeah. But I do so want to see Knives get splatted, even if Vash goes down with him. I can see your scenario, and I can also see one where they both die. I don't see too many with Vash with a rosy future, knowing Nightow's style.

Yeah, I've read that one :-( Don't forget they had bad sex after they'd made their declarations of undying love. That's a really important plot point not to skip.

Oh my God. That was so -- so much more affecting than the anime. Jesus. I have never cried at a manga before. That was really beautiful. I mean it. I'm just going to go and lie on my bed and howl now.

No shit. Hey, the crying at manga was a first for me too!

It's the way Vash can't look at him at the end there that really kills me. He takes the glass from him and then he just sits slightly hunched and stares rigidly forward the whole time, trying so hard to disconnect from it all. *wail* That was the one thing the anime did get right. The only thing - Vash's walled-up reaction.

It's the thing where he has to separate it off and not deal with it right now, because if he starts on that he'll just crack completely and he can't do that. Like the way he reacts when Wolfwood starts saying *stuff* - don't cross the lines now because it hurts too much. Poor guy.

The expressions in this chapter are so effective, especially Vash's - and there's so many pages of that stuff at the end where there's no words, just the way it is, and Nightow really makes the art work. Ouch.

And then it all ends and it's so imperfect.

But it had to be, because that's who these guys are, and there could never be anything else that wasn't *wrong*. Which is why I love them, and Trigun.
