TriMax 10 Chapter 2
Jan. 30th, 2005 07:49 pmJust for Angsty, because she whines XD
Once again, no want spoilers, no clickie!
Chapter Two goes by the name of 'MEIYUU', or 'Sworn Friend'.
For details, I refer you to Sumire's translation here, although there are slight changes, which I'll mention as I go along.
Wolfwood unsurprisingly isn't moving much, since he still has the pointy end of Chapel's cross punisher sticking in him. Even Livio's starting to feel a bit sorry for Wolfwood by this point, but figures it's his own fault for betraying Chapel.
There's a several page flashback as Livio recalls just how much he owes Chapel - the heads of the Eye of Michael assassins wanted to kill him off for being a dangerous psycho. Damn, when those guys think you're too scary to live, you really have to be an utter fruitloop.... TriMax 9 established that even as a kid, Livio had what appeared to be something like a a split personality problem, and would have blackouts, doing things like killing puppies and then apparently not remembering why he did it. Anyway, since Chapel was responsible for Livio, he did the honour thing and shot himself while asking for Livio to be allowed to live. (I'll make a slight amendment to Sumire's details here - what Chapel slides along the table isn't his ammo case, it's his supply of Miracle Drug, so he can't just save himself immediately after he shoots himself.)
Anyway, at this point in the proceedings, Aunt Melanie decides to speak up. She and a bunch of kids have been held at gunpoint all this time by a couple of Chapel's minions. She tells this group of crazy freaks to bugger off and leave the kids alone - they've got no money, and what the hell do these people want with them anyway? (Sumire's p133)

Chapel laughs and asks her if she knows the guy on the floor. He talks about how much he's been altered, and Aunt Melanie finally recognises Wolfwood. "...Nicho...las..." (Sumire's p138)

Wolfwood didn't exactly want to be recognised, but Aunt Melanie's more upset than anything else that one of her kids has turned out to be a highly destructive killer. (And so she bloody well should be since she's the one who handed over kids to freaky assassin groups in the first place, but I digress....) She appreciates that Wolfwood came to try to help them. Wolfwood can only think about how badly he's screwed it up; he couldn't save Livio and he can't save them. He's thinking how Vash is his friend, how he would have helped him if he'd asked, because Vash is even crazier than he is *g*(Sumire's p143)

(At this point in Sumire's summation, the ship lands and Vash gets out. Not in this book. One of those changes I mentioned last post. And there's nothing about Knives on the Ark a couple of pages later either. Someone clearly decided it was superfluous, and I have to agree.)
For Chapel, this is basically the best revenge ever on Wolfwood. He pulls his now rather bloody gun out of Wolfwood and lifts it. And there's those bottles of Miracle Drug right there.... (Sumire's p145)

Chapel points his cross punisher at Aunt Melanie and the kids - and now we get the ship, flying low overhead. Wolfwood makes a grab for the Magic Juice and gets the bottles in his teeth.

A gunshot, and the first shell case falls past Wolfwood as Chapel fires above him. (Sumire's p149)

And Vash is right there, protecting everyone from the bullets with Angel tendrils. (Interestingly, he's nothing like as dramatically all-over feathery as he was when he threw himself in front of Wolfwood in TriMax 8. But he had just come round after being unconscious then and probably wouldn't have had the same control. Or, of course, you could read it as evidence of Wolfwood meaning that much more to him.) And as an aside to someone who knows who they are - see, I told you this was a guy who would jump out of spaceships before they landed when you tried to make me change it in my fic! XD

And Vash and Wolfwood look at one another, Wolfwood thinking again as he did after Aunt Melanie recognised him, 'I've got this friend.' And Vash is so thoroughly lickable here, it's almost hard to believe the page was still dry when I scanned it XD. (Sumire's p152)

Date: 2005-01-30 09:13 pm (UTC)I quite like Aunt Melanie. Despite the fact that she handed over cute-kid!Wolfwood to bastards who were Not Nice to him. She has a hell of a lot to make up for, and she just about manages it.

I think I'll buy two copies of this so one won't be too damaged from the drool and tears.
Damn, when those guys think you're too scary to live, you really have to be an utter fruitloop....
WORD.
And yes. Lickable Vash. Wolfwood fighting to the very end and still being ashamed in front of Aunt Melanie. Aunt Melanie! Oh. Man.

Date: 2005-01-31 09:25 am (UTC)I think Wolfwood was rather more ashamed that he'd been fighting at all, than that he lost. He was covered in a lot of blood that wasn't his own before he got to the losing part, and that whole fight had just been vicious. Wolfwood wasn't exactly playing nice.

Date: 2005-02-09 05:33 pm (UTC)Yeah, there's an awful lot gone on between them if you're only up with the English releases. Vash has done some stuff that scared the crap out of Wolfwood, and Wolfwood had some hairy moments over it and then stuck with him anyway. The last of the lies have been dragged into the open, and Vash knows everything about Wolfwood now and still hangs on to him like a limpet.
The incredible protectiveness that these guys have had for one another for some time now just makes me go 'Guh!' So>/i> hot.
