I've been meaning to do this post for a few days now, since I finally watched the last eps on Thursday. But Friday I went hiking in the sun, and Saturday I was scarily sociable with friends, so here I am a bit late.
But... Monster!
This is one of the tightest, most complex and best series I've seen in quite a while, in any format, anime or live action. This is one man's dedicated, inspired and planned vision brought to life, and it shows. This is a drama/thriller that would be quite at home shown weekly on the BBC or HBO - it was made as an anime, because many things are in Japan because it's cheaper, and no corners were cut in anything else.
This is a manga that, for once, was rendered faithfully to the screen instead of being massacred, or 'adapted', or having 'filler' eps added. Because changing any one brick would bring down the entire skyscraper. This is a single arc plot, with a series of mini-arcs within, with barely a second of screen time wasted. Every character has a purpose and believable motivations (except for Johan, because hey, something of a reality break going on there, but if you thought like Johan? Yeah.) and everything that happens has a reason. It starts off slow and builds, as a good thriller should - every character you think you've seen the last of, you haven't, every event that leaves you wondering 'Why?' will be explained. Maybe twenty eps later, but everything in this universe ties together tighter, and everything begins to happen faster. Everything you assume is wrong, as twist follows twist and incidental characters grow in importance, and everyone who is sucked into this world and these events is marked and changed.
It intrigues from the earliest episodes, it gains force by the mid teens, and by the time it hits the thirties it's a brilliant, uncontrollable addiction, where you have to watch the next episode now and find out what happens to these people. Because these characters are alive and real, with backgrounds and lives and relationships, and there are people you want to like, and can't, and people you're set up to hate, and can't, and nothing in this world is easy, or simple, or wrapped up neatly with a bow.
