Burn Notice (aka Fuck My Brain)
Dec. 17th, 2022 09:53 amA while back, I was talking with a friend about Leverage and he said, "You should watch Burn Notice, it's the same kind of deal." So a month ago, I got around to starting it, and I can see the comparison - it's slickly plotted, some snarky dialogue, good mindless entertainment. The lead's perfectly fine in that generic white male lead way. Bruce Campbell's being Bruce Campbell, no problem there. Sharon Gless is criminally wasted, having little to do most of the time except whine at Michael, but she's good when she gets the chance to do more.
Fiona's kind of annoying, though. After that first ep, I was cringing at the idea of having to listen to her awful cod-Irish accent for 100 episodes, but I mustn't have been the only person who had that reaction, because at the start of ep 2 there's a throwaway line explaining why she has a different accent now. (I'm still not sure what that accent is - is she being English but sometimes strays into American? Is she trying to be American but keeps lapsing into English because the actor's English? Dunno, but either way it's nowhere near as obnoxious as the 'Irish'.)
When I get to season two, the writing for Fiona has improved - she's mostly okay now, instead of always annoying, but she's still no Parker. I genuinely like this show though. Then I arrive at the ep where Michael's setting up to assassinate Larry, and Sam casually says, 'Are you sure you want to do this? I can do it instead, you know.' And bang! Two sentences and just like that I'm in love with Sam, because who doesn't need a friend who'll offer to commit murder for you so that you don't have to?
A few episodes later, Sam does something else awesome that confirms it - yep, I adore this character, and that's fun, because now I'm that bit more invested in the thing, and getting towards the end of season 2, I'm genuinely looking forward to watching every time.
Except last night in bed I found a Burn Notice fic crawling around in my head. That I do NOT fucking need. I just got back to working on my Murder Family WIP in a serious way. Screw you, brain! Why can you not just stick with the plan here???
