tiggymalvern: (down with sickness (fuzipenguin))
I'm back from a trip to Denver with [livejournal.com profile] babaca and [livejournal.com profile] tameiki, which included our first ever visit to the Nan Desu Kan convention.

Good things about Nan Desu Kan:
1) The con takes over the entire hotel and all its rooms for the weekend. This means there are no mundane guests (or religious conference attendees) underfoot being scared by all the costumed freaks. Hotel staff, I suspect, rapidly become immune to anything.

2) More people were in costume than in normal clothes. This may be a consequence of 1). I have never been to a con either in the UK or the US where cosplayers were the majority, and walking around the hallways with the crowds, it all just looked really awesome. They made me feel bad for not making the effort!

3) The main hall was big enough to hold everyone who wanted to be in there, even for events like the AMV show.

Bad Thing about Nan Desu Kan:
1) The main event hall was the only really big room, and/or 7000 people is too many. The biggest of the secondary panel rooms only held 220, which meant that people were actually having to queue to get into generic discussion panels, and even then the end of the line didn't make it inside. Not a problem I've come across at any other con.

So Nan Desu Kan was fun. And as ever, the company was even better!

Also, if you are ever in Denver, make whatever effort is required to visit the Domo Japanese restaurant. Ignore the fact that it's in an odd part of town, next to the railway line, a patch of fenced off wasteland and a grey concrete warehouse. Once you're into the little entrance courtyard, it's beautifully decorated and oozes ambience. There is also far too much really good food. All that, and they're environmentally conscientious about the source of the tuna for their sushi :-)
tiggymalvern: (wtf is with this shit?)
Say Yes to Gay YA! Rachel Manija Brown and Sherwood Smith share their story of a publisher who would only accept their novel if they made the gay character straight or removed him entirely. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lady_ganesh for the heads up.
