May. 25th, 2008 06:31 pmOur SIFF film for today was Youji Yamada's Love and Honour, the third film in his unconnected Samurai trilogy. After I was blown away by Twilight Samurai and delighted by The Hidden Blade, there was no way I was willing to wait for this film to come out on its general release - I wanted to see it now :-)
In this third film, the plot centres on a young samurai whose duties include being one of the food tasters for his feudal lord. When one of the dishes is poisoned, he manages to survive, but is blinded. He is faced not only with the psychological ramifications of sudden disability, but also the more practical issues of how his wife and household will survive without his income.
