POOOOOWWWEEERRR!!!!!

9pm, and we have light! And heat! And good things! Squeezing in 3 hours under the 5 days.

There was a crew working at the end of our street when we came back with our spoils from the chippy at 8.30, and we beeped them in a friendly way as we passed. Then as we sat there munching and drinking sake by candlelight and firelight, the Christmas tree lights came on! The guys didn't let me down!

Everything we've tested so far seems to work, apart from the SO's ancient and specially-selected monitor which turns on, then instantly off again. The food in the freezer is dead, of course (including my carefully chosen free range Christmas turkey :-( ) - it survived 3 days with ice, but 5 was asking a bit much. But POOOOWEEEERRRRR!!!!

Congratulations! :-)
I really don't envy you the days without heat, though. The rest is all very nice and romantic (and hm, I wonder whom I could get to drink sake with me by candlelight...) and I'm sure I could find excitement in trees on the roof, but brrrr, no heat is the pits.
We're off to my folks today where the internet trickles in slow measured minutes. Much as I love visiting, I wish they'd get broadband... or at least a flatrate. :-/

We weren't without heat, since we have fires, and fortunately I've always loved playing with fires and have spent a lifetime deprived of the opportunity to do so XD But the kind of heat that works without attendance is definitely easier and more effective!

I wonder whom I could get to drink sake with me by candlelight...)

Well, I'd volunteer your husband as the first choice ;-) It was warm sake too, since we had the ability to heat things on the stove. Very pleasant!

Unfortunately, A. doesn't like sake. I think I need a visitor from abroad to make my life complete...

Well, as long as he likes the malt whiskey, I guess he's not a dead loss XD

I honestly don't know, but it won't be helped by the fact that the local supermarkets lost large amounts of their stock, of course. I'll find out when I try!

YAY!!!!!!!!!! What a relief! So glad to hear that you guys will have heat and Internet. Whew! Now D and L need to get their power back.

[identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com 2006-12-20 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they and the SO's boss are the only people I personally know now stranded. There would be another, but he has a generator, and not in his living room XD

I honestly would have thought they'd have power long before us - we're way further out of a large town.

Haha, we would have thought so too - in fact we were discussing how, if ours came on today, we'd invite you guys over to use it. XD XD XD

If you're still powerless tonight, you're welcome to come and eat and watch Torchwood with us and stay over in the warmth of our spare room :-) Sadly, we can't extend the invitation to Calvin.

Congrats on getting the power back on! Those guys must've been working around the clock with as much damage as I've seen on the news.

Many grocery stores (mostly the big chains) take special orders without charging extra. You might try that for getting another Christmas turkey?

[identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com 2006-12-20 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they've been dragging in crews from all over the US, and some of the poor sods have been working 40 hours on, 8 hours off. At least the weather settled out for them, there's been no wind since the storm and only the odd bit of misty drizzle.

Yay for power! Five days is harsh. I'm glad your house didn't suffer more damage than it did. To my shame, I have to admit that I saw people mention the power outage in Seattle, but never put it together with your LJ being quiet until I saw your post. Five days without power is stuff that happens to people on the news, not people I know! ;-)

[identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com 2006-12-20 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The novelty does start to wear off after day 2-3 or so XD

To be fair, my LJ often goes quiet for days for no particular reason at all, other than I have nothing inspiring to share. I'm not one of the more loquacious denizens of this land!
