Yaoi Con

Decision made, I'm definitely going this year. I asked the boss for the time off two weeks ago, and he hasn't confirmed it yet. Well, screw it, I'm going either way.

I already plan to leave this job in December anyway. If the boss refuses my time off, he simply gets my notice that much earlier.

See you in San Francisco!

Stuff Wot I Bought - On Art and Books

One of the deals I made with myself going to yaoi con this year was that I wasn't going to buy any artwork. I already have lots of artwork looking for walls to hang on, and I really don't need any more. Books, OTOH, those are always good, and two of my favourite fan artists solved my art issues for me by bringing out artbooks, right on cue :-) One of them also provided illustrations for a slash short story in book form. Reviews with sample scans are now served....

What, nudity? Under here? Really? )

Yaoi Con - the summary post

Ah, yaoi con! What can be better in the late autumn than four pleasantly warm days in San Francisco with friends? It was fantastic to spend time with the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] tameiki1 again, after over a year without her charming and ever-entertaining company, as well as catching up with a number of other friends from earlier cons and adding the inevitable new ones XD We got to spend much more time with the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] kiriko_moth and [livejournal.com profile] jambery than I managed last year, which was lovely - great company, and even better tour guides, those ladies make :-) They introduced us to all the best shops in the Castro (no, not all of them were sex shops, though I did pick up a little something to try out on the SO ;-) ), and some great eateries. The Castro's Nirvana served very nice food and equally good (and since it was happy hour, more than reasonably priced) cocktails. Saturday evening was an over-abundance of tasty Tex-Mex, which almost made us too late for the bishie auction, eek! But we squeezed in the door, and by a sheer and most unlikely fluke, I benefited from our appalling timing by ending up in the front row....

As has been the story of the last couple of cons, I spent remarkably little time actually at the con activities and a lot chatting with friends, shopping in Japan town, and seeing a few sights - on Sunday I introduced [livejournal.com profile] tameiki1 to the Sutro baths, and a group of us headed down to San Jose and a tour of the Winchester Mystery House in the evening. Somehow there's never enough time to see everything and spend with everyone - [livejournal.com profile] meerkat and [livejournal.com profile] babaca, I'll definitely have to try and grab more of you two next time round :-)

I got back home yesterday afternoon with a suitcase weighing a little over 20lb more than the one I left with - somehow each year I get the feeling I won't be buying all that much, and then I do....

There will be more to come! There will be comments and reviews of Stuff Wot I Bought! There will be ramblings on the sights that were seen! Though I make no promises on exactly when some of those will be forthcoming - I think it might take me a while to read all of the manga XD

Y-con departure

Another quick stray check-in, this time from a hotel lobby while I wait for the airport shuttle. San Fran's been warm and sunny and mid-70s summery beautiful, and I've met a whole bunch of fantastic people again, and a whole bunch more of them for the first time (great to finally catch up with you, [livejournal.com profile] hibem, and sorry to have missed you, [livejournal.com profile] andmydog :-( ). I've bought far too much stuff, taken far too many pics which I'll be digging through over the next few days. I've averaged 5 and a half hours of broken sleep a night and I'm sitting here with red eyes and huge great black bags hanging underneath them something like a bloodhound suffering conjunctivitis, but it's been damn good fun. And yes, I did enjoy the food [livejournal.com profile] cherrybomb23z XD

And the SO should have Torchwood ready and waiting for me on my return, oh baby... ;-)

Yaoi con!

I had a fantastic time, with a bunch of new faces to go with most of the old ones returned from last time.

Cut for rambling )

Now I am sleepy....

Yaoi-con was FANTASTIC!

As a con, it was the second most disorganised I've ever been to, but still managed to have some really great moments despite the multiple small (and few less small) annoyances. As an excuse to meet up with a bunch of fellow tasteful pervs like [livejournal.com profile] tameiki1 [livejournal.com profile] nekojita [livejournal.com profile] forsaken1973 [livejournal.com profile] mac_lynn [livejournal.com profile] duet_chan [livejournal.com profile] kendokat [livejournal.com profile] moonriddler_mim and [livejournal.com profile] hidden_hero, pimp each other our hot guys (and alcohol) of choice and purchase excessive quantities of fine pr0n, it would be damn hard to surpass.

On the subject of pimping, in that respect [livejournal.com profile] hidden_hero should come with a warning stamped on her forehead, because she is dangerously good at it. All broke people should steer clear!

It will definitely be interesting to see if any results come out of the panel discussing a boys' love game aimed at the western market, but even if it never happens, the panel was fun and intriguing. Probably the most surprising thing about it was the high level of agreement between attendees regarding what we would want to see, with only a few points that a consensus wasn't quickly reached on.

San Fran was beautiful in warm and golden sunshine, unlike my current wet locale, and Hallowe'en in the Castro was a bizarre and fun (if horrendously crowded) costumed street party which definitely had to be seen. Extreme gratitude goes to [livejournal.com profile] mac_lynn for tirelessly patient chauffering duties that allowed us to see the city rather than just the hotel.

The current plan is to be back next year, oh yeah, sleep deprivation and all....
