Signal Boost

Say Yes to Gay YA! Rachel Manija Brown and Sherwood Smith share their story of a publisher who would only accept their novel if they made the gay character straight or removed him entirely. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lady_ganesh for the heads up.

And in the latest (revolting) development, the agents have come out and basically called Sherwood and Rachel big ol' poopyheads. Classy!

Good. The original posters were classy enough not to identify the specific publishers, but levelled a more generalised complaint at industry attitudes. If the publishers have now outed themselves as the bigots in question, I couldn't have asked for more.

There are a few people actually buying it, which...grrr, argh.

Thank you for your support!

To continue to support YA fiction with LGBTQ characters, I have proposed creating Permanent Floating YA Diversity Book Clubs. (http://rachelmanija.livejournal.com/976665.html) If you wish to participate, the link will explain how to begin one, join one, or simply pass on the word.

I thought you would be interested to hear that we sold Stranger (aka "the Yes Gay YA novel") to Viking. Click on this link (http://rachelmanija.livejournal.com/1075926.html) for a post with more details. Thank you so much for your support!
