Bad Connections fic

I've just realised that since I posted my last fic in a hurry before I shot out of town, I forgot to mention it here. Oversight!

Bad Connections. Hannigram, 5K words, set between Yakimono and Su-zakana.

Written for a porn trope challenge, for the prompt: “I’m fixing your *insert appliance/furniture/house thing here* for you and now I’m sweaty and half naked and you’re drooling” sex.

Fandom collision

I've been telling people for the last few years that season one of the Hannibal TV series is basically Tokyo Babylon, and season two is Death Note. Then last night someone pointed out to me that Hannibal is also Pet Shop of Horrors, and OMG, how the hell did I miss that?

Lets see - Immaculately dressed, exquisitely mannered prissy perfectionist with a sideline in murder falls in love with a scruffy, lonely law enforcement guy who lives like a slob, and while said law enforcement guy is supposedly trying to entrap the murderer and get evidence to arrest them, they actually spend a lot of time hanging out with a killer and being far too friendly. Oh, and there’s a sort of informal shared custody arrangement with a kid who isn’t theirs. The only difference is, in Hannibal it's the detective who hordes animals, not the killer.

De Profundis series complete

I've posted the final parts of the final story in my post-Wrath of the Lamb Hannibal fanfic series.

Out of the Depths
The Depths of Trust
The Lingering Past
The New Normal
Whatever is Realised

I’m finally done, a year, a month, and some days after I sat on a plane frantically scribbling the first conversations between Jack and Will that grew into ‘Out of the Depths.’ At that point, I thought ‘Out of the Depths’ would be a one off, and getting Will to a place where he could make a choice would be the end of it. It turns out I had to follow Will through all of his choices before I could stop.

Bryan Fuller said that after the fall would be when Will Graham’s journey started to get really interesting, and apparently my brain agreed. We will likely never get to see Bryan’s vision for season four, so we share those of a few thousand fangirls, and this was mine.

Thank you, Bryan Fuller, for creating some of the most fascinating, crazy, inspirational series on television, and in particular for Hannibal, which rekindled my writing bug after a seven year hiatus. You gave me something truly special.

Oh, and I have a tumblr account now. Guess what, I'm tiggymalvern there too.

Baby Driver

So we belatedly got around to seeing Baby Driver this week, a film that I'd heard nothing but rave reviews for. And I'm still trying to figure out how I really rate it, because there are two different ways to assess it.

One way is as a heist movie about a getaway driver, as which it is well acted, entertaining fun, but not extraordinary or innovative. The other way to review it is as a unique gimmick, because 75% of the film is not only edited, but deliberately shot to fit its soundtrack. The only time that's not the case is when the music isn't playing. And as a gimmick it's unquestionably clever, but the problem with it is that you sometimes find yourself watching the editing rather than watching the film. And that's not just a me thing, as someone who has made music vids and edited footage that way, because the SO said the same.

When it works at its best, it's brilliant. There's one stunning scene where Baby walks down the street to get coffee for the group, orders it and then takes it back to the office. And it's not just the actor's movements and rhythm that are shot to the song playing, it's the graffiti on the walls and the items for sale in the shops he walks past that reflect the song's lyrics and instrumentation, and I can barely imagine how tricky the whole thing must have been to shoot. But the final effect is astounding, because it's four minutes of a guy going to fetch coffee from a block away and then coming back, and it's mesmerising. That's when it's obviously very forced and you don't care, but there are some occasions when the conceit starts to feel a bit more intrusive.

The SO and I also liked the fact that the film got the obvious car chase scene, the one with the Subaru and the Ken Block style moves, out of the way right at the start, so that you're not waiting for it. After that they could play with the vehicles a bit differently :-)

It's clever as hell, and I loved seeing it, and it's definitely given me a lot more thought than most heist movies would, but I think it should be a one off and not a trend.

Successful Pimping

This past Christmas, I bought my sister the first three seasons of Justified on DVD. I told her that she might enjoy it, and she might find Timothy Olyphant quite pleasing.

My sister works a lot, and she didn't get around to watching them for quite some time. Then she broke her foot and couldn't drive to work and was bored at home.

When I last spoke to her, she'd watched the whole first season in less than a week and started on the second. It turns out that she finds Timothy Olyphant VERY pleasing, and the redneck black humour highly entertaining. She admitted that she kept having to rewind the DVD and watch certain scenes multiple times over. My sister is not remotely the fangirl type; she doesn't DO things like that. She's someone who watches soaps and reality TV.

I consider this a very successful job of corruption.

It's Roger again

So Roger Federer won his eighth Wimbledon title without ever dropping a set, matching Nadal's romp through the French last month. I guess he just had a point to make. It was certainly the easiest Wimbledon final he's played in a very long time. I love the attitude he's taking this year, though, saying screw the world rankings and all that crap, he's just going to play tennis when he wants to, and when he wants to, he wins. Why the hell not?

I did feel sorry for Venus yesterday, I wanted her to win. I remember watching when she first won Wimbledon, just turned twenty, and she bounced around with practically the world's biggest smile; she was adorable. It would have meant the world to her to win again after all the issues she's had with illness, but I guess it meant too much, because after she lost that tight first set, her game just collapsed. Sad to see, but she was so gracious in her interview afterwards, and big smiles again talking about her sister.

I know they'll both have to stop being major competitors some time in the next few years, but meanwhile they're amazing to watch.

My brain has been eaten by porn

Writing fanfic has always been a disjointed process for me. I have no concept of how some people can start at the beginning and write through to the end. I write scenes in the order they solidify in my head, piecing the whole lot together bit by bit as more of the gaps fill themselves in. And through all the fandoms I wrote in for so many years, there was a pretty clear pattern that the hardest sections to write, and thus the last to get written, were the action scenes and the smut.

Except for the Hannibal fandom. The action-heavy sequences still get written last, and they're definitely perspiration, not inspiration. But apparently with these two guys I'm all about the porn. The sex just writes itself effortlessly, and it keeps on writing, until some kissing and 69-ing grows to over four thousand words. Worse than that, I'm even writing sex scenes for scenarios I'm never going to actually put in a fic, because they camp there in my head, and I can't get back to writing the plot for my WIP until I've got them out of my brain.

I've been trying to figure out why this is, and I think it's because these two guys are almost never just having sex. One or both of them always has an agenda, an ulterior motive that goes beyond an enjoyable orgasm, and sometimes it's successful and sometimes it's not, but they never stop digging in one another's brains. It's practically a compulsion for them to poke at each other and see what happens. Even when you've got them shacked up together in domestic bliss with too many dogs, they don't stop playing games. Maybe they would after five years or so when they've finally run out of corners to dig in, but it's interesting to play with the ideas inbetween!

Feedback is happiness

I got a comment today on my Hannibal series telling me, among other things, that my fics are now the reader's personal headcanon for what happened after the series ended. Considering that there are literally thousands of post-series fanfics out there in this fandom, I am taking that as a very big compliment indeed :-)

Black Sails

We watched the final episode of the final season of Black Sails tonight. This series has been absolutely rock solid in the writing throughout, with smart people making decisions for reasons that make internal sense, even when you don't agree with the reasons, and they lead to horrific outcomes. The twists and turns of it have been so frequent throughout, with constantly shifting alliances and betrayed friendships, that we went into the last episode with absolutely no clue how it was going to turn out (other than Long John Silver has to be alive, because of the book). And in the end, all the violence of the series is underpinned and triggered by the love stories of its main characters, and I cried myself thoroughly snotty over them.

The way the writers interwove the stories of historical and fictional characters and tweaked both to create a satisfying whole is so clever. And since the network didn't cancel it and let the writers complete their chosen ending, there's absolutely no reason to write fanfic for it. I'm just going to plug it one last time because it's good.

Your Name

We went to see the Japanese animated film Your Name this afternoon. I'd seen only five star reviews of it, and I'd been waiting for a chance to see it, and it's everything I'd heard and expected. It's funny and sweet and charming, and just plain all around lovely. So I pimp it! Though I'm left to wonder how the dub version dealt with that scene with all confusion over the pronouns...

Hannibal fic 2.1

In a fit of total self-indulgence, I added an unplanned and very belated third chapter to The Depths of Trust and doubled the length of the entire thing. My brain was having way too much fun playing with these two guys trying to figure their way around each other. Because after years of mutual obsession and emotional and physical damage, deciding to stop all of that and fuck like bunnies doesn’t automatically mean they can have an actual relationship…

And now I can get back to writing part five of this series, which was what I started doing before my brain took off at a tangent.

EEEEEEE!!!! OMG Roger did it!

I didn't think he would get the 18th slam, not after so long. Damn. I had hope when he kept reaching finals, but he kept losing to Novak, and then he got injured again, and I thought the chance was gone.

And another Roger - Rafa match at that, it seems crazy. I honestly thought he'd thrown it away when he came out with that string of errors early in the fourth set. In years past, he would have caved against Rafa in the fifth when he went a break down, but he didn't. Wow.

And now I really need to go to sleep, but I'm just too bouncy.

Hannibal Food

I cooked lomo saltado tonight, mainly taken from the recipe on Janice Poon's blog, with a few modifications. I made it the traditional Peruvian way, with steak...

I never intended to cook Hannibal food. But I had to look up the recipe when I had Hannibal make it for Will again as a special dinner in that last fanfic, and then I thought damn, that sounds good.

It turned out really well, nice and spicy. It got the husband vote too, so I'll be making it again. Thanks, Janice, and script writers. Nom.

TV meme

Because I haven't talked about some of the TV shows I've enjoyed this year, and here's my excuse to catch up.

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2016?
The Night Manager, And Then There Were None (both mini-series), Deutschland 83, Luke Cage, Preacher, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Stranger Things, The Man in the High Castle, The Leftovers

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2016?
Castle (the concept had run out of steam, series 7 was bad), Gotham (started season 2 and bailed by episode 6 - what happened, did you replace all your writers?), Halt and Catch Fire (was bored enough by season 2 not to start 3 - a real shame, because the first one was great), The Americans (got bored when season two became less about espionage and more of a family soap opera, so never started season 3. I'll stick with Deutschland for retro espionage, I'm really looking forward to the sequel season.)
And I had to let go of Agent Carter because the bastards cancelled it, not my choice at all!

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2016? Why?
Ash vs the Evil Dead, The Night Of. I will watch them, I'm just always behind.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2017?
American Gods. If that's not seriously good, given the people involved, I'm going to be so annoyed.

Which TV show impressed you least in 2016?
I still have one episode left to watch, but I'm going to say Dirk Gently. It could have been so much more. It's zany and weird, but it needs to do more than that - it needs to be either seriously clever or major fun, and it's not. For zany and weird and crazily fun at the same time, watch Preacher. It's as mad as a box of frogs, and the black humour and religious irreverence is really what nails it. Poor Jesse, struggling to hang onto Christian faith in a world that contains vampires of dubious morality and angels of the serious wrath-of-God, brutal destruction variety...

Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2017 unless things significantly improve?
I'd say Dirk Gently, but they weren't planning more anyway.

Which TV shows do you think you'll never let go of no matter how crappy they get? Why?
Maybe Doctor Who? It's pretty crappy right now, but it's gone through a lot of crappy phases and it picks up again eventually. Plus I like Peter Capaldi in the role, even if he's cursed with awful scripts.

Which TV show did you enjoy the most in 2016?
Hannibal, of course. Yes, it was cancelled in 2015, but I didn't see series three until 2016 (like I said, always behind).

And I have to add, after the sad disappointment that was Jessica Jones, the first series of Luke Cage was solid stuff. Lots of plot, that just missed going too far or becoming annoying, and Alfre Woodard was awesome. How the hell is she 64? Simone Missick was great as Misty too.

Hannibal New Year!

It's taken a ridiculously long time to get this finished, because Other Stuff Ate My Life, but I just sneaked it in under the wire :-)

Hannibal Fic the Fourth

The sequel to the other three.

Why is it that I find myself pouring out domestic fluff when I'm writing about a serial killer and whatever the hell Will Graham is? I guess I'm just contrary that way. Of course domestic fluff with these two comes with sharp edges hidden in the pockets...

Anyway, goodbye 2016, and I hope you're all planning some fun for the start of 2017. Maybe Donald Trump will do something to get himself impeached?

Hannibal fic the Third

Hannibal POV, creep factor rising.

The Lingering Past at AO3.

Third fic in the De Profundus series.

This is just a short one, filling in a time gap between where the second one left off, and where the next couple are going. When I started writing Hannibal fic, I told myself I wouldn't write Hannibal POV, but he crept into my head anyway. He does that a lot. I think I need to scrub my brain out now.

Save me now

Someone on Twitter has persuaded the SO to start watching Initial D.

Someone else who has poor enough taste to like Dragonball Z then told him they think Initial D is too bad to watch. I said he should publicly declare that even his wife who likes anime and slash and cars isn't prepared to watch it.
