Oh, he had real imaginative genius, and he's had a massive influence on horror for the last eighty years. Anyone who can create an icon as now-ubiquitous as Cthulhu has a lot going for them. But personally I just find his books a bit of a slog - he's too much of his time, and I'm too much of mine :-(
