I was never that interested in Nate in the original series, he was the character I tuned out the most (white guy in charge, whatever). But Sophie's dynamic is definitely off without him, which is valid TBH, and I like the way Eliot and Harry stepped in in the current series and talked it through with her - her issues with having to be the one in charge instead of Nate. They've done good things with the characters' arcs; I just wish they'd done better with the plots of the week, because it takes both to keep me interested - I won't watch for the characters if the plots suck and vice versa.
I didn't think it was just me, but I also can't discount the influence of my last year glued to BN where the plots are so damn tight (and stuff that takes a bit more effort to be believable is actually addressed and lampshaded internally rather than ignored). It's sad, though, that the writers got a second chance and don't seem to be putting the same effort in.
