TriMax 9 Chapter 3
'LR'
My translation, my guesswork, my mistakes.
In the basement of the orphanage, Aunt Melanie and the kids hear the explosions and wonder what's happening. "I'm scared," says one of the kids. A number of them are clinging to Aunt Melanie. "Hey, hey, it's okay!" Melanie tells them. "I'll protect you all."
One of the older boys isn't convinced. "The enemy have guns! You've got nothing, Auntie!!" And while he's being outspoken and blunt, he adds, " And you got fat."
"What's my figure got to do with it?" demands Aunt M. "You mean because my body can only move slowly, I'll make a good target?"
The kid starts back-pedalling fast. "No, I never said that!! I never went that far!!"
A young girl sitting in the corner speaks up. "Times like this," she says, "Nico-onii would have sorted it out, wouldn't he?"
Pages 78-9. Aunt Melanie agrees he would have. "But Linda, Nicholas isn't here any more." Outside, Livio and Wolfwood have a cautious stand-off as Melanie continues speaking. "We have to stop relying on someone who isn't around."

Page 80. Livio watches Wolfwood smoke. "If you'll finish inhaling, let's start, shall we?" "Don't be in such a hurry," says Wolfwood. "Let's just chat. We don't know if this will be the last conversation we get to have, do we?" Livio looks at him for a moment. "You've changed," he announces. Wolfwood looks pensive. "It goes beyond change." I can't reconstruct the grammar of his last sentence precisely, but it's about how they became killers and what else they could have been.

Livio says that only applies to Wolfwood. "I have no other way." Flashback to the time after Livio ran away from the orphanage. Several months after he left, he ended up in a town. It wasn't a very nice place.
Page 82. Livio walks into town watched by a group of three men and collapses in the shade of an alleyway.

Page 83. He wakes up and finds a sheet of paper has been put in his pocket. "Lazlo...? ...Who's that...? When did they get the chance to...?" (Yeah, I know the English here says Razlo. But Japanese doesn't distinguish too well between 'R' and 'L' and the later notes we see all say Lazlo, so I'm going with the majority. One of Nightow's few mistakes.) "I don't understand... I've got a bad feeling." 'I was getting worn out by just about everything' Livio narrates.

Page 84. The group of guys corner Livio in an alley as he looks through rubbish bins. The gist of the long speech is that this is their town and Livio isn't wanted here. (Livio looks so awful here - all the lines and the shadows on his face. Poor kid.)
Livio tries to explain that he's unimportant, not worth bothering with. The thugs disagree and beat the crap out of him.
Page 87. Livio wakes up in a rubbish skip and finds there's another note in his pocket.

The notes keep on coming, always encouraging him, telling him he has the strength. Livio never heard a sound. 'Until that day came....'
Page 89. 'I showed those guys my true colours. It was several weeks later.' Livio meets them again in an alleyway filled with billowing washing.

"You're getting right on my nerves, you shitty brat!!" And Livio gets beaten up again. He narrates how it's interesting that a group of guys could get so much entertainment out of one kid.
Page 91. He just wants it to end quickly. He has nowhere to live, no place to go. Nothing changes. He remembers one of the laughing kids at the orphanage, and he's had enough.

Something strange happens in the alleyway, something barely seen among the billowing sheets, something bloody.
Page 95. Livio tells Wolfwood that's when Lazlo became the person in charge. Flashback to a freaky-looking, laughing Livio standing among corpses, finally recognising the strange things going on in his head.

Page 96. "You kept me waiting, Livio," says the psycho Lazlo version. "You... you're a horrible guy," says Livio. "I've been here all along and you didn't realise," Lazlo says. "Now, shall we go?" "Go...? Where to?" "Somewhere we'll be needed!!" says Lazlo, all slanty-eyed and evil.

Page 97. Wolfwood: "So that guy's the reason you were led to the Eye of Michael... Where is he now?" (I think that's it anyway - damn Kansai-ben!) Livio tells him not to say anything more. "Don't degenerate into that, Livio," says Wolfwood. "Yeah, but..." Livio gives him a sharp look, "that applies to you too, Wolfwood-san."

Pages 98-9. Both men start to move at the same time...

Page 101. ...and they each have a gun to the other's head. Fingers tighten on the triggers, and they dive aside as the shots fire.

They don't quite move fast enough, and both of them are bleeding. Livio kicks high and Wolfwood drops to the floor.
Page 104. He's lifting his pistol as he rolls into position.

Page 105. "Be at peace, Livio."

Page 106. Watching from inside the orphanage, Chapel hears the gunshot.

It's kind of hard to dislike Livio when he's a poor, victimised, sad little psychopath, isn't it?
