You are not elected to protect yourselves from negative campaigns. You are not elected to earn yourselves a good rating from the NRA. You are elected to represent the people. And poll after poll by organisations from both sides of the political divide have made it pretty damn clear what the people want. The people want background checks before buying guns.

46% of US senators, you are cowards who would rather cover your own asses than do your job for the people who chose you.

Yeah, I'm losing faith in American democracy. And I want so badly for this president to be able to move some things forward! But with things the way they are, it seems hopeless.

Harry Reid might actually be the only 'no' voter with a valid reason. As I understand it from the Washington Post, the vote can be reconsidered at a later date if a senator has changed their mind. So when it becomes obvious a measure is going to fail, one of the supporters votes no in order to 'change their mind' and raise the issue again in the future.

US democracy is completely screwed until the money is taken out of it. As long as corporate interests and lobbyists can spend what they like, and campaigning for re-election requires millions in expenditure, all the US politicians will put their corporate backers first.

The solution is to impose severe spending limits for elections, then the politicians won't be reliant on huge donations, and can vote how they really think. It will never happen. The corporate interests would never allow it.

Actually, I was referring to his refusal to reform or remove the fillibuster, which would have prevented this whole pile of shit happening in the first place.

That's all on him, and his failure is simply cowardice.

I suspect that probably opens a huge can of worms, since filibusters are a politic tactic dating back a couple of hundred years. I'll have to look into that, though, I haven't read the details on it being raised as a possibility. Thanks for letting me know.

Anyone who wants to be a politician should automatically be banned from the job, I think. We'd be better off picking them at random, like jurors :-(
