SIFF the Final
Just one more film to add, the documentary We Are Legion about the origins and actions of the Anonymous group of web activists.
The documentary follows Anonymous from its origins as a group of trolls and meme-generators through the initial united action against the Church of Scientology, and on to later actions in support of Wikileaks and citizens under oppressive governments. Some of the interviewees are no longer anonymous and involved on the bad end of legal proceedings, while others remain more hidden. Some are clearly strongly politically motivated, while others are just out to poke things with sticks because they can. The documentary interviews a wide range of subjects, including some who have been the target of Anonymous attacks, and gives a balanced view. There's a lot of amusement in the film, just through the statements of some of the interviewees, both intentional and not. Interesting material, although sometimes the film seems to jump around a bit, especially at the start when trying to cover the early history of the net groups without getting bogged down. 8/10.
That's the end of SIFF for me this year, because the festival goes on through the weekend, but I'll be out of town for the next 5 days. And I didn't see any films I hated this year, good choices all around!
