Breakfast on Pluto

What a great film! I don't even know exactly what I was expecting to see when I walked into the cinema, but it wasn't what I got!

I've heard almost nothing about this one, and I can't imagine why, because it's glorious, so I take it upon myself to pimp :-) It's the tale of a transvestite growing up in a small Irish town in the 60s and 70s and refusing to be anything but the girl she knows herself to be, and then her life on moving to London to find the mother who abandoned her. I'd seen trailers, but they really hadn't sold me on it or conveyed what the film's like.

It ought to be one of the most soul-destroying films out there with everything she experiences, and in some ways it is. But the film is so filled with the combination of quirky humour, romantic optimism and fantasy that the main character uses to get herself through it all, it's also an utter delight that leaves you laughing and with hope for the future. I can't think of the last time I saw a film that made me laugh so hard and so often, and also made me want to cry so damn much.

Cillian Murphy is just brilliant all through, and the supporting cast don't do a bad job either XD. It's not a subtle film in many ways, telegraphing many of its upcoming plot developments so it's not something that's going to surprise you. But it's not intending to be subtle, with its gloriously OTT seventies look and soundtrack for much of it, and subtlety wouldn't sit with the insane humour that floods out of it half the time. What it is is an experience :-)

And now I'll have to go and read the book....
