Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Wow.This is just like HBO's Rome, except without the good sets, good script and good actors. Which leaves, um, the nudity, and... nope, I'm empty apart from the bare flesh. I haven't seen actors pasted onto such bad CG backgrounds since the 80s BBC, it's so retro!

Oh no! I had really high hopes! Is it complete pish?

I've watched two episodes so far - it isn't yet entirely clear if this is a train wreck bad enough to be watched compulsively in screaming gales of laughter, or just consigned to the scrap heap. Either way, I predict it won't be nominated for any Emmys.

I gather it's already got a second season? Gah, I would much rather have had more Rome.

It's almost hilariously bad. I might watch it for the sheer OMGSOBAD factor, except I get grossed out by the slo-mo blood and flying teeth and things. So... I don't know; I may still have a peek now and then just to see how far they go with the sex, because I am cheaply amused like that. :-)

It does? I haven't been following the news. Ack, and when I think of all the good stuff that gets cancelled...

I don't know about Rome - I think the second season was a little less tight, it didn't quite have the direction after they killed Caesar, although it was still good. I think it was probably a good choice to end it when they did and end it well, rather than have it drag out.

The flying red corn syrup just looks silly, though. And always in slo-mo, lol. I'm not quite decided yet whether it's bad enough to be good.

Poor Lucy Lawless - the white-faced Roman make-up with all that bright red hair is not a flattering look for her!

The slo-mo blood is already getting excessive by episode 2. I hope they stop that soon. Not because it grosses me out, just because it's old already. Yes, we've seen it, thank you. Try spending your budget on more realistic-looking sets instead!

Well, in this case I take it that retro is... bad. Think I'll give it a pass. Thanks for the heads up! :p

Retro was giving me flashbacks - I haven't seen people sitting in meadows that fake in a loooong time XD

[identity profile] tameiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-10 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Most definitely giving it a pass then. >.<;

I think a third season got canned, and that affected the quality of the narrative in the second season (Babylon 5 syndrome). The narrative about the Jewish characters, for example, didn't really get developed or go anywhere. Apparently a movie is in the works...

A movie? Interesting, especially given how many of the main cast they killed off!

Start with Caesar and work down!
